Cool metaphor of depression, but what exactly are the consequences to *not* smiling? The terrain turned weird colours... and that was it. If you don't give the player any incentive to do something, they most likely won't. In this case, it's enough to just slowly walk to the bedroom.

It's definitely something to keep in mind. The consequences for not smiling are that the things around them die and so the incentive is to avoid killing things at least not killing people and animals.
