It depends on how Whitman's ability. If his ability is hearing thoughts, the ability will didn't works well if he does not know the languages. Meanwhile, if his ability is seeing the projections of others' thoughts, his ability will useless against people who have aphantasia 

It's an interesting question! He'll reappear eventually, so I think I'll keep it a secret for now~
