I'm not sure if this counts as a bug/oversight but is it intentional for units like Fire Mage to sometimes be referred to as firemage? I'm referring to inconsistent capitalization and spacing. It only struck me as aesthetically a little off when I caught it after battling or when I went to talk with the units at the hut.

I'm only a little ways in (around the Forest Maze) but I've really enjoyed it so far! It gave me a lot of early GBA Fire Emblem vibes with the character interactions and when I had the option to talk with the units in the hut I felt a wave of nostalgia. Also when exploring it reminded me of when I first played Etrian Odyssey on the DS, and brought back a lot of good memories.  I've played a fair share of VNs and some of those hero collecting games, and I honestly think you've done an amazing job pulling out some of the best parts of both with this. The art, sound effects, and music also all fit together really well and its impressive how much work you've put into this!

I came across your page while looking for some inspiration in trying out Ren'Py on Youtube, and found your videos to be not only well thought out and educational but also honest about the pros/cons of solo development. Just wanted to say thanks for putting all your content out on Youtube (I know that also takes quite a bit of work!) and with your games themselves here! I look forward checking out more of your games and hope you'll continue making things you enjoy!

Hi Randomdoodle,

Gosh thank you so much for taking the time to try out my game and write your thoughts here. It really made my day. This type of comment really means so much to me! I have a soft spot for the earlier Fire Emblem games, as they really did stand out to me as my favorite tactical RPGs of that era and I've played Etrian Odyssey as well, since that style of dungeon crawler is a rare find and hard sell (an hommage to the wizardry games imo which I also love... I must be a glutton for punishment because all those games can have brutal RNG haha).

In response to your observation about the naming inconsistancy... Thank you for mentioning this as it reminds me that I shouldn't keep ignoring this problem, lol. This is largely caused by messy use of object classes when I sometimes refer to  an object name,  unit.name "Fire Mage" or the object itself,   firemage = Unit() and I need to find a way to make a function to refer to the randomized object's property rather than just the randomized object itself. This would make so much of my code more streamlined but I haven't found it yet. I will continue to try to find the answer to this and see what I can do to fix the visibility on the user's end.

Also thank you for watching my youtube videos and I am glad that you found them useful. Gamedev as any artistic journey can definitely be a long one but it shouldn't be a lonely or grueling one. I wasted a good decade or two of my life thinking it needed to be but it's really okay to make art for the joy of it. The 5 year old me had something going on, and it took watching my own son grow to remember the part of me that was lost and beaten down. As corny as it sounds, we are all human and this kind of human connection is what really makes art worth doing imo, so again I thank you your words and best wishes on your journey, I hope you also enjoy it.
