Thanks for playing, you need to place the planks in a way to give yourself enough distance.
I tried it again and managed to make the jump! Just need to get some practice in. Great game overall. My favourite part is still the appearance of the game. The lighthouse in the distance before it comes fully into view is a highlight of that.
