Is there a way to see if my phone has the right requirements to run the game? it crashes upon pressing any menu button or trying to progress past the first line of text in the opening scene.

Unfortunately, no. Ren'py and Android have always struggled to work without issues together and the issue is always a combination of OS version and hardware. Newer OS's on older hardware especially seem to struggle.
The next update will contain an upgrade to the latest SDK which should fix the issues you're having. Fingers crossed!
