The whole 20 ratings threshold seems kinda weird honestly. Looking at the results here, the game that got 6th only passed the threshold by 2.

As in, if two people hadn't stumbled on it, one of the best games submitted wouldn't have been noticed, which is completely insane.

Its an imperfect solution for sure but i can't think of a better method. While it does work better on more established jams like ludum dare where you have a well-balanced karma system and the rescue group thing, I still think its good how it requires you to give back to the community. Definitely could be better tho, and it turns out you still get a rank if you're too low, you just cant come first place which isnt too bad ig. We're both rlly happy with our results :)

I guess, but the game that came first was dangerously close to 20 ratings too.

Maybe it would be better to establish the threshold after the jam based on a publicly known formula? Something like the median minus a predetermined amount?

yeah because honestly the more review the harder it is to win, because it is more precise. It is a pretty unstable method of getting an average.

That is what itch does, if you see how it says raw score and score the, raw score is the ratings from everyone and the real score is ratings after being penalized if under the median, but the formula isn’t public afaik
