Hey! First off, your RPG project is pretty cool!

What's working well:

  • The systems like inventory, item recognition, and entering buildings are smooth.
  • The game's style is neat.
  • Big props for the character editor!

But here are some areas where it could use some love:

  1. Ambitious Scope: It seems like the project took on a lot, but some mechanics are unfinished.
  2. Missing Instructions: Figuring out how to find food was a bit of a puzzle in itself. Some clearer guidance would help.
  3. Bulky Demons: Battles with demons take a looong time, and it gets very routinely, and, well, boring. Could either be made easier to defeat or more exciting to fight with.
  4. Clunky Movement: Moving around feels a bit clunky and slow. Speeding up the character or making movement linear might help (unless it's a limitation of the engine or conscious decision)
  5. Food's Not So Effective: Time needed to find the food completely negates the effect from it. You could make it easier to get or give it a more significant boost.

I hope my comment is not seen as too critical, you seemed like the guy with ambition, so I thought some outside overview over the problems present, could help you to understand a bit better what to consider in this or future projects, so I tried to approach it with the same mindset as I approach my own projects - try to figure out the biggest problems, and propose possible solutions

Hope there will be more great projects in your future :)

Hey there! Thank you for this detailed comment and for trying the game! Also, thanks for your honesty! Demon hunting and some other things were done in the last hours before the jam ended. I didn't have enough time to make online highscores, but I've added the option to save scores (which sadly nobody used "Save&SeeScores"). Characters in the game walk square by square. I really prefer this method and I almost use it in every game project. It worked fine on a localhost, but it works a little bit slowly when I host it on a server machine. The server is located in Europe, so it might work slower for people that are not from Europe. I don't think I will finish this game since I'm not allowed to do that in the jam. Once again, thanks so much for the comment, it means a lot to me!

No problems :)
Ah, there was a save&scores button, I didn't even see that
About the speeds - I don't think there is a huge difference between the hostings, in the end the game is played locally isn't it? Only the scores are loaded to and from the server. Still, alright then, if that was a conscious decision. Well, I don't even remember when was the last time I played tile-based games with fixed movement, so maybe for this genre the acceptable range of speed is a bit different.

Well, you're not allowed to edit the game in the context of the jam ratings - you need to initially have your entry submitted for others to look at what you achieved in this time, but who's to say you can't use what you already developed to make something outside of this scope, for youself, your own pleasure? It's still your game :)
