the old version I have is .37.12, which still works, .44.4 and .43 both launch but no window ever appears, and I can't find app.nw in the resource folder for some reason. The permissions seem to be in order and I've gone through the terminal to clear it with security as well. I'm a bit stumped.

I don't know what you're inability to find the app.nw folder means, that is definitely odd. Can you see app.nw in the old 0.37 version? In any case, you can try this new pre-patched Mac download.
