I believe there is something wrong with the controls on Mac, since I'm almost never able to actually attack. Either way, it was fun checking this project out!
You're only controlling your followers, so you don't actually ever attack. I've seen confusion about that since the player sprite has a weapon, thanks for trying it out :)
