this is a weird one. there are some cool ideas here, but the amount of jank (and unkillable spiders) makes it really hard to play.
first off, the itch page is very bare, so I think it takes a real weirdo (who really likes cubes) to even try this game. there’s a point to be made about being mysterious and luring people in, but I think you need a bit more substance on the itch page to make people interested in the first place.
as for the game itself, I love the cubes for hands and feet. my favorite part of this game is the physics of how they sway when moving and looking around. it’s a bit unruly and makes it hard to do things (especially when unkillable spiders are involved), but it’s a really cool idea.
my experience with the game: after getting the shotgun, I hopped back to the cabin to try it on the locked box — but my plan was ruined by spiders. I tried again, managed to break open the box with 4-5 shotgun blasts, and through pure luck I managed to pick up the contents while being pushed around by spiders. on the second level, I fell into the first abyss I encountered, after failing a really long jump. it was really punishing to get sent back to the first level… but I gave it a few more attempts anyway. the spiders made it really hard to even get into the cabin after finding the shotgun, so I eventually gave up. I guess I just got lucky before. the way spiders bully you is the biggest problem with this game, as it turns an interesting adventure-mystery into a rage-bait mess. (did I mention that the spiders seem unkillable? and even if they are killable, there are too many of them and I need to save ammo for the locked box.)
a few other things I wanted to mention:
- the shadows are too dark, making it hard to see things. it could be a stylistic choice, but I think some ambient lighting would be nice.
- the footstep sounds are pretty annoying as they trigger twice for every step. I ended up jumping around instead, which turned out to be faster than walking.
- the vertical mouse angle limit is too strict in my opinion. I suggest locking it to +/- 89.9 degrees to allow full freedom while preventing issues past 90 degrees.
- the mouse sensitivity is too high, even at the lowest setting.
- clicking on the mouse sensitivity sliders while holding the shotgun actually fires the shotgun. what a jumpscare, I thought the game was paused?!
- a checkpoint after getting the thing in the locked box would be nice.
- it seems like you can get softlocked if you run out of shotgun shells.
- the spiders are too merciless and too unkillable.
to conclude, I really wanted to like this, but it’s simply too rough. like I mentioned, there are definitely some cool ideas here, it’s just lacking testing and polish.
