did you happen to move a storage container through the mailbox? I had a similar issue in 0.6.3 moving the fishing rod box through the mailbox... turns out you should not do that
I believe the damage is done once it's been sent unfortunately, if you lost any unique items you'll have to fetch them in a new save and not leave them in a backpack while swapping again :P
