First of all, it's worth recognizing how impressive it is that a game of this size and scale gets released at all. This is clearly something that you've been on and off developing for a long time, with bits and pieces of the ideas kicking around for years before that.

That's why, after over 40 hours spent with the game and seeing its story to the end, it almost physically hurts to say that it was a tedious broken mess of a game.

The story is long-winded, meandering, exposition heavy, and generally hard to follow. Plot threads and characters are picked up and abandoned with an unpredictable pacing. With a few exceptions, each chapter feels like its own self contained story that probably should have just been its own game, where it would have more room to breathe and develop its characters.
The best way I can describe it is that things sort of just.... happen. In the wake of a story beat, it's common for a character to say something like "alright, let's go to..." without all that much indication on why they would know that's the way forward. It's a roller coaster ride of the worst kind: a bumpy and nauseating one. The story being so scatterbrained and the events coming from out of nowhere made it really hard to get invested in both the overarching story and the individual planet stories.

The silver lining of the iffy writing is that a staggering amount of it is fully voice acted. I think the voice acting is the game's greatest strength. Not because it's good or anything like that, but because it's there. It frequently elevates the writing to something I can only describe as peak comedic gold. There is some seriously meme-worthy stuff in here that I just might be quoting for a while. If any kind of fanbase or streamer latches onto this game by some miracle, this will be the reason why. I can say with certainty that it's what kept me going.

If the entire game were nothing but cutscenes and spotty voice acting, it might actually be pretty easy to recommend. Unfortunately, to get to that good stuff, players have to actually play the game, and I don't see a full playthrough of this appearing on YouTube any time soon for people to experience vicariously.
The game is riddled with countless softlocks and crashes, and a player not savvy enough to keep multiple saves can very easily ruin a playthrough. A lot of these bugs come from a frankly embarrassing use of RPG Maker's events system. Seeing how many event tiles were controlled by other parallel events instead of simple pages and/or self switches broke my brain. To that end, it becomes even more impressive that the game managed to get finished and released, because I don't know who could ever have what it takes to create and test a game that's scripted in this way. But this crazy way of doing events is probably also why a comprehensive bugfixing patch is unlikely; it's pervasive throughout the entire game, and would probably take months of reworking and testing it.
The best I can recommend for anyone looking to experience the game is to install RPG Maker VX Ace so they can make whatever fixes and edits they need and boot the game in playtest mode.

The LMBS scripts used for combat are.... fine.... but nothing was really done to improve the feeling of controls or attacks. Balancing of progression and stats is completely broken, and by the 2nd hour no enemy was a challenge ever again. Nothing could stand up to my adaptool-beefed stats and my trusty basic attack button.
It's a shame that the combat ends up being so throwaway and nothing, because if it actually felt like a LMBS Tales game instead of superficially resembling one, it could be the glue that holds the whole thing together.

As much negative as I've said, and how much more negative I could say, I still think that Dark Matter Hudokai must be seen. It deserves a special place in RPG Maker history for its sheer scale and its lengthy development. There weren't a whole lot of naively-scoped "dream game" projects from over 10 years ago that actually managed to get finished, and Dark Matter Hudokai feels like a time capsule from that era. I'm crossing my fingers that some moderately well-known online personality that digs into obscure indie games sheds a spotlight on this game sometime soon.

I really hope that Dark Matter Hudokai is not Edgar Duncan's last game. With a smaller scope and more focus, the ambition could be put to great use.

What an interesting idea! I've been looking forward to everything you do ever since I played Untitled Puzzle Game.

For as limited as some of the presentation is, it gets across the mood really well, and I enjoy the stories of all the characters. I didn't love the reveals of the true conclusion, but I have to admit it was a fitting end.

Just about the only thing that I actively dislike here is the time commitment for seeing all the content. With minimal player choices and a lot of waiting time, it became quite boring as early as the 3rd attempt. I ended up just sitting around with the game running while I kept clicking and doing other things on my phone.
It's not the worst thing in the world, and it didn't stop me from seeing the true ending, but I question how many players will have the patience to sit through it all. Seems like the sort of game that, if it became popular, people would prefer to just watch all the final words scenes on youtube instead of play it themselves.

Still, I overall really enjoyed what I saw.

Wow. That was.
Actually awesome.

I do not have the words in me to describe my feelings on this game.

I played it to completion and saw what I'm pretty sure is all the meaningful content that's currently in it.
This is the sort of game that's certainly trying to say SOMETHING of substance, but it would require multiple days of deliberation amongst top philosophers that are smoking the finest kush for us to even start pretending to understand what that something is.

It's a broken mess as far as its combat and progression goes, but that's kind of to be expected for 99% of RPG Maker games.
What I think BOY DEAD gets right is how enjoyable it feels to simply explore the game's world and see what it has to offer.

Probably my favorite idea (even if the execution is sloppy) is acquiring skills that give access to new options and content. Getting a "talk to plants" skill from a randomly acquired book, then realizing it's not just a combat skill is great! And it's not the only instance of this!

So like, is the game good? Dude I have no fucking idea to be honest.
Are its comedic bits funny? Usually. I think. Maybe.
Is it offensive and transgressive? I still cannot tell.

I can recommend this game to any and all chaotic people that are sympathetic to RPG Maker jank.

UUED community · Created a new topic This game is cool.

The story is insane and ridiculous and I like it a lot.
I look forward to more.

"now the game crashes properly" has gotta be in the top 10 phrases i've read in patch notes before

I really appreciate a lot of the things you tried to do with this game.

I especially enjoyed the ending, which most people would probably find confusing or unsatisfying. I really like unanswered questions.

If you end up making that game about Aiden, I'd  be sure to play it!

I did! Hit "new game" a few times thinking there would be a something.
And I proceeded to not buy TotK.

That was a spiritual experience.
Very fun.

NEW JUUPPY GAME? NEW JUUPPY GAME!!!!!!!!

If I play 1.1 with my 1.0 save file, will there be a problem?

Amazing.

I was born to play games such as this.

Iris was a synthetic human created in a Turbotax lab, meant to spread their influence after assimilating into society.
She escaped and tried to be her own woman, but a passion for taxes is what she was made for. This is why she's so eager to help you do her taxes, and why she especially hates Turbotax (on top of the other reasons). She does love you, but helping with tax forms is the only way she knows how to express that love.

I am so happy that this game commits to the bit and doesn't have some kind of crazy twist in a "gotcha" moment.
The only plot twist of sorts is totally missable, and has no bearing on whether or not you get those taxes done.

While some of its humor is in-your-face, most of the funniest things about this game and the way it was released are a little bit subtle.
For the most part, this game is exactly what it says it is. That itself is the joke, and it didn't need much more.

This release gives me hope for the future of ironic visual novels. It's hope that I desperately needed.

Please make more.

chapter 3 seems to have some missing assets in the web browser version. there may be more after that point.

this was 100% worth my time.

looks like in the room with the piano, the mirror never displays the textbox that's supposed to show up before lucius dies. unlike other bugs that are more a result of shitposting, this bug ruins a potential joke, so wanted to let you know

There's a lot of good here, but right now I think it's muddied by poor pacing.

The opening section does a great job of building intrigue, but it drags on just long enough that it starts to become tiring.
I didn't properly enter my first battle until 21 minutes had passed. It left a really poor first impression.

The game world is laid out in a "go along this path, interact with the content" sort of way, which is not a bad thing on its own. What I see as a problem is how cramped together everything is. Being bombarded with so many amusing NPCs in such a short time just made it exhausting, and the charm wore off quickly.

The dark turn at the end of the demo was executed well in a vacuum, but like the cramped paths before it, I felt like it was too much, too soon. I didn't feel a whole lot of build up to it.

The core combat is a lot of fun, a lot of care was put into the presentation, and I am super interested to see what happens next in the story. These are the things I love a lot. It's just that as is, I'm hoping for some tweaks to the early game, so these elements have more room to breathe and can really shine.

Outstanding.

I just wish I could give my cat beer, like in real life.

It's disappointing that there hasn't been any attention on this.

It's short and has some rushed and clunky storytelling, but it seems to indicate a bright future for whatever your next projects are.

The passion and effort are palpable!

not exactly being subtle, but i respect that

games like this justify the existence of rpg maker as a piece of software

I honestly think the story would be more interesting and compelling if the intro text didn't exist.
It explains things way too much, and removes a lot of the symbolism and mystery.
A lot of the instant game overs and puzzles are a little bad, but overall the experience is a positive one. It's enjoyable!

amazing

i dont speak spanish but i am in love with this

leaving a comment to remind myself to play later :)
