Unfortunately we ran out of time to add a tutorial system, so I'll do my best to describe how to play the game here:

  • To send bees out from the hive, select one or more bees by clicking and dragging on-screen, then right click on the exit cell (the one glowing white).
  • To send bees back into the hive, select the bees then right-click on the hive in the Overworld.
  • To issue an order to selected bees, simply right-click on the object. If no object is selected with a right-click, the selected bees will move to that position. Otherwise, they will interact with the selected object (eg. they will attack a unit or enemy spawner selected in this way).
  • To place buildings and/or spawn more worker bees, you will need certain amounts of pebbles and nectar. These can be harvested from large rocks and daisies respectively.
  • To place a building, select a single bee then click on one of the first 5 actions in the bottom right corner to select a building to place. Once this is done, left-click on the cell in the hive where you want to place the building.
  • To spawn more worker bees (assuming you have the nectar to do so), you need to select the throne building in the middle of the hive, then click on the action in the bottom right corner.
  • To change a worker bee's role, select it and then use either the 6th or 7th action to change its role. The bee will first move to a hive building corresponding to the role before transforming.
  • To win the game, you must destroy the enemy spawner/s in the level.

Hope this helps!

Once the jam is over we'll be revisiting the development of this game to add much needed improvements based on feedback from the jam, plus a few other ideas of our own.

That's fair enough.  I had this same thought close to the end date but didn't have enough time to implement a tutorial system.

There are certainly a bunch of additions Matt and I are open to adding in future updates. One of my ideas is a story mode that would play out similarly to Warcraft 3's story mode (this game, in my head at least, forms interconnecting lore in a shared universe with most of my other games I'm working on - including a zelda-style RPG set in the same insect world as this one).

Fun little game. Noticed a few bugs (namely that I was being pushed away from the wasps when they pursued me unless they had me surrounded).

I feel as though the map could be a little more zoomed out. It becomes very hard to know where you need to go otherwise. I do like the visible threat circle around the wasps though.

Performs very well in the browser, which is a big plus for me.
