Game: https://blueberryblanket.itch.io/dearly-bewitched

A visual novel about the power of good food and bluffing your way through anything.

Currently only the Fire & Ice path is fully playable. The Earth & Space path is playable, but there aren't any endings. The Sea & Storm path is not yet implemented. It won't crash the game or anything (that I know of), but will dump you back to the title screen.

Please let me know if you run into any glitches or bugs, or if I have any spelling errors or grammatical mistakes, or any weird pieces of writing! Character sprites are place holders, and the main menu needs a background image. Please give me any feedback you have! Thank you, really appreciate it!

I've been a busy little worker bee doing some behind-the-scene stuff. Ironing out programming bugs, fixing errors, programing the recipe menu which was... Surprisingly finicky. I also finished drawing all the food! All's left is to finish writing the second and third paths and drawing/animating the characters! That's right, these witches are gonna be animated babyyyy (assuming everything goes to plan, of course). More on that later though, for now, have some pretty pictures!

Next time, I'll get into what software I've been using, including my attempts at learning Live2D! Until then!

Puns are always appropriate and I will stand by this until the day I day. Nevertheless, looks like you've progressed a lot! Keep up the good work!

Oohh, I love the aesthetic, especially the logo! If you ask me, all that time was worth it! As for your namebox problem, hmm... What are your gui.name variables set at? For mine, it's:

define gui.name_xpos = 240
define gui.name_ypos = -60
define gui.name_xalign = 0.0

You'll also probably want a negative ypos value, since it sets itself relative to the textbox. Try fiddling around with those and see if that helps! Also, make sure your file is under gui/namebox.png. Good luck!

I would die for this Todd, and am excited to see the others! You've already done a lot, I'm excited to see more!

The image really helps illustrate your idea, I'm really looking forward to playing this one! What a totally creative concept!

This concept has me guffawing, it's so clever! I cannot wait to see how this turns out!

Yesterday, I started drawing backgrounds. This was a mistake. I quickly realized I don't have the patience to do all the backgrounds to the standard I want in the time period provided, so I opted to go on the hunt for free materials. After gathering the ones I had license for, I tweaked them to my liking, so all backgrounds are done! Yay!

Today, I focused on recipes and drawing food. Eagle-eyed viewers may have noticed the "Recipes" button on my main menu. Because a lot of my game revolves around the power of food, I decided pretty early on that I wanted real recipes players could make themselves! I fancy myself quite the home chef, and now using my own recipes, all the food featured in the game is now totally doable for players to make as well! Once you see the finished product in game, the recipe for that dish will unlock! I also drew about 75% of the food, so enjoy some eye candy (harr harr).

Rest of the week will be dedicated to writing, so I might not have much to show! But don't worry, I'm working my little fingers as fast as they'll go! Until next time!

Actually, thought about it more during my commute, and you could use a screen. Something like this:

(Ignore the random placement of the imagebuttons, I quickly cannibalized my map screen for this, you can set them wherever you want, or make an hbox with them in it.)

Then, in the script call it like this:

Repeat for all genders, with a pass for they/them. Hope this helps!

Haha you would think it would be simpler, but this is a problem with English, not Python. We just have so... So many pronouns. As for using a screen instead of a menu... I wouldn't recommend it. Lots of variables to keep track of there. It would probably just be simpler to use the in-game menu system instead. You could kind of fudge the menu limitation and use a special set of images to make it look like a screen, though. Something like this:

Then reset it back to your defaults once the gender portion is done.  As for the script file, it would still look something like this:

But that's just how English works. Down with English. Booooo.

Good luck on your project, [BlueberryBlanketPronoun] am rooting for you!

That goddess twist is -chef's kiss- This is coming together so nicely, you're making a lot of progress! Keep it up!

I'm a sucker for witches, and I'm a long time Harvest Moon fan, so I am HYPED for this! Good luck!

Phew, another long day on the books! Today, I finished writing of one of the routes, including all three endings associated with it. It's really nice seeing it all written out like that! Since I'm happy with the way the writing is going, here's a little blurb for the story:

"I always said my food was magical, but I didn't mean it literally!!!"
Dahlia was fine living her quiet life running her bakery, but now a witch has whisked her off, saying she has to join a witch coven! Can Dahlia's sweet creations fool these witches long enough to convince them she's a witch too, or will these dysfunctional spellcasters be the end of her? With the power of good food, help bring the witches together and solve their problems, or let poor Dahlia get turned into a toad!"

I also worked on the GUI today. Here are some screenshots!

Here's the main menu:Still needs a background image.

Look at all those settings!

Always nice to have save slots that work!

And the textbox/quick menu! I tried to make them look like a recipe card! (The BG is a placeholder, not my art)

That's all for today, excited to get more done tomorrow!

Wow, you got a lot done! I agree Renpy can be a jerk when it comes to menus and screens, but it looks like you've done a lot in a limited amount of time! Really nice work!

I think the sprites came out great! Looking forward to seeing more from this project, I love the mix of VN and RPG elements!

Hi there! Love me some casual visual novels! As for programming player pronouns, I highly recommend the Lemmasoft forums: https://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewtopic.php?t=45971

Good luck on your project! Looking forward to it!

I really love this concept, it's both totally doable for a game jam but could be expanded upon in really interesting ways! Good luck on your journey, I can't wait to see what you create!

Hi, all! Hope everyone is enjoying their jam so far! I've had an idea for a VN rattling around for forever, so decided to sit down and actually get it out there. Can't wait to see what happens!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today was all about writing, concept art, and getting my premise set. I've got the rough draft for the main path, as well as one route half-way written. The current plan is 9 different endings with 3 different routes (orz) but if I keep at this pace, I think I can manage it!

I also did the concept art for the main cast, designs aren't final but they're a rough idea.

(The cat is the most important, obviously).

Framework for the point system I'm using is also done, so hopefully things keep progressing this smoothly! Last thing done today is the logo. Good luck everyone!

I am absolutely living for this concept. Looking forward to seeing the work you all put in!
