Hi! I just finished running a one-shot game and what a wonderful system it is. I love it. I think it is the best implementation of GLoG I've found so far.
The only bit that I think needs a bit more clarification is Reactions when mentioned in page 5. None of my players had Tales with reactions, and all of them assumed reactions were freeform and tried to attack outside of their turn or block attacks aimed at allies. Only later we discovered Reactions were actually codified in the Tales.
I think the easy fix is replacing "Characters may take a reaction each round if able." for "Characters may take a reaction from one of their Tales each round."
Thank you for creating Shadow & Fae!
Playing Dead Gods for the first time. We had two games under 2:15 hours!
Treasure Hunters v Orc Raiding Party faced each other in a ruined dungeon.
For the first game, we used 4 v 4 minis, and the archers proved a great asset.
For the second game we used 4 v 6 minis (I replaced some orcs with peasants to try them out). Again, archers in a vantage point proved deadly to peasants that, being so wounded by the end, auto-exploded on activation.
Overall, we liked the game very much, fast to play and fun. You can have a mini-tournament in a couple of hours without a problem, although it would require standardizing certain rules that are not clearly defined in the text. We found some editing issues and feel the rules could be a bit clearer in some aspects without losing its rules-light philosophy.
We will be playing again.
I've played this game twice now and love it.
It is hard to comment on it without spoiling the experience, because as clear as the description on this page is, there are surprises waiting for you through the night (I'd recommend NOT TO READ the cards descriptions before play, let it surprise you!)
If you are looking for a game to share an evening of emotions with people you like, try it out!
My only warning would be that a definitive closure to the stories you make is not assured. Be open to that. You might end up with a "slices of life" narrative, although not at all a boring one!
