After a full-on "project reset", using all that I've learned about Unity dev in the last 2 years or so, I've released a new playable alpha of my third-person RPG for download.


This new build focuses primarily on performance, and establishing an engine baseline that's smooth and fun for all combinations of hardware. It also starts to bring out additional quests, characters, and dialogues, as well as establishing a vibrant, beautiful backdrop to the game.

I've released a new version of my retro Breakout / Batty clone, Retro Racket Revolution!

Among several improvements and new editor features, this release introduces Boss Battle Levels! You'll need to defeat these monsters, as well as clear the level, in order to win! This festive-themed villain, code-named "Bad Santa", is the first of many boss battles to come in future releases!

Looks like someone has been very, very naughty!

This looks fantastic! It really triggers my own memories of playing PS1 horror games as a kid. Great work, really looking forward to seeing more of this game!

With the latest release of my retro Breakout clone, Retro Racket Revolution, I've updated the Level Editor with a snazzy new feature! You can now share your level designs with other players, simply by pasting the generated code into an email, Discord, chat or even an itch.io comment!

Hi! I've decided to make my first ever game completely free to download and play.

It's called Retro Racket Revolution and is a remake of the game "Batty" for the ZX Spectrum, itself a Breakout / Arkanoid clone from the 1980s.

The game features:

  • All 15 levels from the original "Batty" game.
  • One-player or two-player co-op game modes.
  • 10 power-ups from extra lives to mega ball to laser weapons.
  • Aliens, bombs, indestructible bricks and other obstacles and challenges.
  • Funky retro tunes.
  • A full level editor to edit existing levels or create your own.

I'm still developing fixes, tweaks, enhancements and new features for the game. Keep an eye out for release announcements or suggest or request your own!

The game has been made for Windows PCs but I have included an experimental Linux build for download. I can only test this in a VM at the moment, so I'm not too sure how well it plays on that platform.

The game is a homage to a game called "Batty", released in 1987 for the ZX Spectrum. It's a Breakout / Arkanoid clone with lots of power-ups, cool gameplay features, funky retro tunes, and devious level designs!

There is a free demo of the game for you to try. If you like it, the full version has a bunch of additional features including a 2-player co-op mode, all 15 levels from the original game, and an integrated level creator and editor.

Hi, and thanks for trying the game! It's a very early alpha/prototype of what I'm trying to build. I think I've realised that creating an open-world RPG in Unity is a BIG undertaking for a hobby developer, so things are going much slower than I'd perhaps hoped. The downloads that I post are typically updates on core systems, and don't generally contain much content or story. I will get there, but it's just going to take me a while! Thank you again for your support, and I hope you'll stick around to see what's next!

Ahhh, yes, sorry! All that's been blown away by the new builds. I started the whole thing again from scratch! But good comment, thank you! The idea was to cement the "lowly farmer" idea, so I'll be bringing these back at some point, so your point is defo valid! :)

The new version is live, and I'm hoping is far more performant than previous builds. If you get a mo to give it a go, I'd welcome any further feedback.

I've just published a new alpha of my medieval RPG for Windows called "Darskerry Redemption". It's a hobby project that I've been working on, really as a way of learning Unity from scratch. It's been quite an undertaking, and this is the latest in a number of "restarts" where I've taken what I've learned and started again!

This really is a hobby project, done in my spare time, with a plan to release the game for free (or a donation) when it's done. I'm grateful for ANY and ALL feedback, as I really am coming at this with little knowledge or experience! Your input could be the difference I need to make this worthwhile. The game follows the story of a humble farmer, plagued by dreams of some distant horror. A past once forgotten must be faced, and sacrifices must be made to save the forsaken Isle of Darskerry. Will you face your inner demons and the very real terror that stalks the land? Will you find ultimate redemption?

I'm very pleased to have released the March preview build of my gorgeous looking RPG / stealth adventure, Hide and Seek! Lots of changes and tweaks in this build, including an all-new "Adventure mode". This starts to bring the real game together, with a huge 2km x 2km map, with a variety of biomes, locations, characters and quests. There is a new bow weapon, which makes for some really satisfying combat encountered with the giant spider creatures that inhabit the land.

Loads of new features and fixes, focussing on user interface and a more coherent gameplay experience. I've set up a Discord, where anyone can come along and discuss the game, make suggestions, get involved in the vision and future development. I'd love to see some "itchers" join up, and am massively open to contributions of all kinds!

Great feedback again, thank you! The remains of Rexxar's family can be found by a rock on route to the treasure. It's guarded by a Gobbler. It's quite hard to see, and I'm toying with the idea of adding quest locations to the minimap.

I thought I'd implemented removal of all living creatures from the minimap on death. I'll check that, may have done it on the Enemy class instead of the inherited one. Corpses are left intentionally, actually tagged as food, and I'm fine tuning a "needs" system for creatures and animals, including hunger and thirst. Good call on AI balance and behaviour - the stag AI is a bit over powered! The Timid Animal class is meant to be a bit more cautious, but needs tweaking, as I would like them to actively run at the first sight of trouble. 

I'm currently focusing on UI for the next release, to flesh out a Quest Journal and Inventory system. Proving way harder than I'd anticipated, and more so as I'm not artistically inclined!

I must admit, trees and grass are handled by an asset called Gaia Pro 2021. It's amazing. I think most trees, rocks, etc have 3 LOD levels, and I think adding "billboards" as you describe is quite straight forward. I'm looking at having a parallel project targeting mobile devices / switch, with low poly assets, where fine tuning performance will be even more important. 

I'd definitely set up a Discord - I think that's a great idea. I'm struggling to get interest on itch.io, though, really low number of views and downloads. I fear a Discord would be a very lonely place at present! Will look into it though, even if it means you and I can chat a bit easier! I'm really grateful for your help and feedback. In fact I've already added you in the "Special Thanks" section of the new credits scrolled in my current dev build. Hope that's okay! 

First Feb release coming in a couple of weeks, if I can get the UI sorted. Your feedback is spurring me on! 

These look amazing! I'm working on a medieval themed 3rd party adventure game. Currently in the HD Render Pipeline in Unity, targeting PC. 

I want to create a mobile friendly equovalent, and am looking for low poly assets that retain the feel of the game. I'll be keeping an eye on this for the future!

Love the idea of the spyglass and tying that into "acquiring" the minimap! Genius! That's definitely going into the next build!

"Hide and Seek" is a beautiful, high def 3rd person stealth adventure, set in a medieval world. Our latest alpha brings a new playable character "The Hunter", a new enemy ("The Gobbler"), a new UI, melee combat, and the first demonstration of our new Quest engine ("Quest Machine"). This is on top of other alpha features, such as biome based levels, weather, day-night cycle, fully explorable buildings, enemies, NPCs, animals and more!

I am a one-man hobby developer, and this game is a labour of love that I pour my free time into. The game is being developed in Unity, using a number of third party assets and tools. I'm very transparent about how I'm using assets and building the game, and you can find lots of details in my active DevLog. I aim to deliver 2 major releases each month and I am adding features and finesse as fast as I can.

We continue to release regular updates to our gorgeous stealth 'em up, "Hide and Seek"! Our latest release has loads of new goodies including a stunning new desert biome and a whole new female "hunter" character. This release also includes the first taster of melee combat, which is a big part of upcoming iterations.

I've just realised what you meant by giant spider legs in the screenshot! Hahaha! I've absolutely no idea what causes this, but it does seem to randomly happen. I'll remove those enemy models, while I figure out what's causing this.

Totally agree with everything here, and we'll definitely be addressing these observations in future releases.

One of the biggest challenges as a one-man band is performance tuning and defining minimum specs. I have my Ryzen 7 / RTX 2070 machine and that's it, nothing else to test on. There are, however, ways and means and I'm certainly going to look to ways to disable certain features to get better performance, as well as tune what's already there. Totally agree with the "toxic water" - I wanted a way to prevent players from simply swimming to the objective on levels with lakes and rivers, so need something better to address that.

The other thing is to just CD to the butler folder and run it from there. 

Started learning Unity a few months ago, having dabbled in modding the Subnautica games. Foolishly (I think) settled on the High Def Render Pipeline for our game, which has been a challenge. Lots of churn going on with Unity builds and the different render pipelines. I do like it though, and as a coder at heart I like working with C#. Totally rely on the Asset Store for visuals and audio - artistic talent of a dead slug, me! 😁

Hi! Very new to the itch community, so very nice to meet you all!

I am a "hobbyist coder", coming from a very recent interest in modding and Unity, but very much as a dad with a full-time job that has nowt all to do with computer games. Based on some otherwordly ideas from my two kids, we built a game that we've unimaginatively called "Hide and Seek" in Unity, targetting Windows PCs as we wrestle with the abomination that is Unity's High Definition Render Pipeline. We've described the game as a "Medievil themed stealth game... with spiders", which pretty much describes it to a tee! :)

This is very much a "work in progress", and we're super keen to get feedback and help from this amazing community, see how far we can take this concept and game. You can read more about the game and download it from our itch page here:
