This update will include some editing, clarifications, and a final review of some game aspects like monsters and mechanics. Nothing major, but hopefully making it truly worthwhile as a real TTRPG. Stay tuned!

Thank you, and my apologies! PC stands for "player character", but it should be a protagonist. I fumbled my own terminology. :D There are some terms in the RPG industry that are hard to shake out sometimes. I will fix this soon and updated the PDF!

Thank you for your comments! Very insightful. As this is a work in progress, I will be looking at your suggestions and integrating them into the system.  As you stated, this is a basic, core platform, and the idea is to have people grab this and make their own stuff. Anything that facilitates this in terms of rules is definitely welcome!

Thanks for letting me know! I've uploaded the images.

Based on a random thought by halfminofarmer (@john_errwin), and a short but interesting discussion with Saice Shoop (@SaiceShoop), I decided to document the ideas being thrown around for using a d8/d6/d4 system as a replacement for 3d6. This sparked the creation of what is called the 864 RPG System, a set of simple RPG mechanics. The concept of adding and removing dice from actions appeals to me as an elegant mechanism. In the 864 System, the curve of probability changes dramatically as you lose or add dice.

We have created a consolidated version of the current rules used by games such as Peer Pressure and Dark Chrome! This version turns this into a generic, yet expandable system.

The base idea is that entities have abilities or skills that have three ratings: high, average, or low. A high ability rolls d8 + d6 + d4. Average, d8 + d6. Low, rolls only a d8. These are rolled against a target number of 8; if you roll 8+, you succeed!

Nothing is final in the system for now, and it’s open to contribution from anyone that might want to be part of this. This is a non-profit, open project, that will explore the possibilities in this simple yet elegant system as we create, define, and shape it into a complete ruleset.

In its open-source spirit, we have a GitHub repository with the documents. Feel free to create an account there and create your own branch and documents!

Have fun, and keep those dice rolling!

Dhextiny is a role-playing game engine that uses a hex-shaped board and a single d6 to determine all action results in the game. I intend to eventually create specific settings for fantasy, cyberpunk, and who knows what else!

Thank you! The license on the zine is the one found here, which states:

  • Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
  • Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material
  • Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
  • NonCommercial — You may not use the material for commercial purposes.

So you can definitely create a setting based upon it and make it public, as long as it's not commercial (i.e., you sell the setting for profit).  The rulebook has a bit of a tighter license currently:

  • Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
  • Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material
  • Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
  • NonCommercial — You may not use the material for commercial purposes.
  • NoDerivatives — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material.

That last line is key. However, I'm re-evaluating the licenses at this moment. I need something that will guard the game from blatant copying, but will allow people to create their own stuff based on it, and publish it even for profit (like a setting). I'd love to see people like you creating settings, and why not, even sell them here! I will keep you posted on this; I'm pretty certain I'll be making a decision between today and tomorrow, and will update the PDFs with the correct licenses if needed.

But definitely, go ahead and create your setting! It's exciting to see people create stuff based on my little game; I'm truly honored by that.

Thank you!

Hello everyone! You can blame Michael Lombardi for me being here.  :)

I've been a long-time TTRPG player and dabbled with designing my own games throughout all those years, but it was at the end of last year when I took it seriously and created an engine that had the right balance of super right rules and yet covered all aspects of gaming! It's called the ORC Engine (Opposed Roll Contest), and it's very easy to learn and use, and only required D6s. My first game on top of this, Perilous Ventures, is a medieval fantasy RPG that's in its final stages of playtest and you can get it for free here on itch.

I also developed a simpler fantasy RPG called 52 Fates, which is my DreamJam entry, and it uses a single, regular playing card deck for all its mechanics. It really brings a new dimension to gameplay by adding a light-yet-interesting layer to decision making in combat. 52 Fates is free, and finished, although I will be creating more stuff for it.

I'm currently planning a new game based on the ORC Engine that will not be medieval fantasy. Its name is Justfall, and I expect to have the initial playtest edition out there in a couple of months.

I'm eager to see all the awesome stuff submitted in the DreamJam!
