Wow, that's some very detailed feedback! Firstly, thank you for playing the demo and and sending across your thoughts.

I'm glad you appreciated the change of pace in the storyline and felt truly immersed in the experience. There will be plenty more times in the full game where you will experience this so lots to look forward to.

I have been working on updating the UI too for the full game so hopefully these changes to the junk collection numbers will help keep players like yourself motivated throughout the game.

I will also have another look at the junk collection animations. Of course, there are times when a lot is going on on screen so want to make sure this is as intuitive for players as possible.

I have already made some improvements to the tutorial to better illustrate the controls so this is definitely coming.

And I'm not sure which jump you found 'controversial' but now that you have overcome it, it will stand you in good stead for the rest of the game! ;)

With regards to cut scenes, I animated my sprites in Promotion and then used flash to push them around the screen, drop in SFX, etc. Hope that helps with your project.

I really liked your play through and commentary and you still have plenty left to see in the demo ;) I hope you enjoy the rest of the demo as much as the first 10 mins. I'm also really happy that you enjoyed the story elements too and feel this was unique - that was my intention.

I have one small favour to ask, if you wouldn't mind leaving a rating for the game that would really help other potentials players see the quality of the game.

Looks like I won't be bucking the trend of self promotion but I have a couple of games to suggest!

First is to check out my pixel platforming game, Horace. It's only a demo at the moment but I think there is still plenty of quality to see from the approx. 2 hours of game play you will get! Please let me know your feedback too.

It's all good feedback and I knew there would be flaws. Would be good to see if something like this could be implemented in some way shape or form. A report functionality would be needed for people absuing the system (and there will definitely be some!)

Maybe as a reward outside of montary value could be exposure opportunities for all people who have earned particular badges (like a reward based on loyalty). In October, all users who have the "entered 5 game jams" badge can recommend a game for the homepage. Probably needs to exclude their own titles to make it supportive to all community members

Not sure how we could make this all work, we would most likely need support from Itch to get something like this running.

Reading the other comments really gets the creative juices flowing. My idea definitely builds on the 'thinking outside of the box' ideas.

Maybe a loyalty scheme of some sort would help retention on the platform. I'm thinking similar to the Xbox achievements type set up when you can earn badges as a developer and a customer which allow everyone to earn rewards, be it monetary or something else. For example, rate 5 games, earn the Mates Rates badge and earn $X to spend in the store. Then these accounts can use these badges to display next to their names on the forum/discord/etc as like a badge of honor.

I'm sure the idea would need refining but I'm thinking something like this would be more beneficial for indie devs who all want to support each other.

How long the Game was in development and if it's still in development, early access, or complete: I've spent the past 6 years developing Horace! It's still in development but edging closer to launch. At this moment in time, I estimate I will release the final version early next year. 

Why you became a game developer in the first place: I played Space Invaders when I was about 4 and it's all I wanted to do since! It's all I have done for the past 25 years. I hated school as it got in the way of my pixelling at home.

ABOUT THE GAME

Horace is a story-driven platform game starring a naive robot learning about the meaning of his life but later ends up trying to save the world as the story takes an apocalyptic turn. That's not all in the demo so you’ll just need to trust me. You will encounter ability upgrades that will test you brain as much as your traversal skills. Couple this with the cinematic story telling and I really think you end up with a unique experience!

The demo will give you roughly the first hour of the game so this is where you will get a real sense of the story and then the second half is where you get more of the Metroidnavia style of  game play shining through as you explore more of the house.

Thanks for the video! Interesting to see people playing in a way I never intended. In the room with with the moving paintings it's MUCH easier if instead of trying to jump across the room you try to fall down the room.

Hi there, thanks so much for being the first commenter!

The rooms after the 'fast forward' are part of the end game. I wondered if the difficulty was going to be too much when juxtaposed against the tutorial/intro, but I didn't want to show the other game locations *just* yet. The final game will have a concept of 'shields' to give you a bit more leeway with failure on the tougher rooms. 

Chain climbing - you're right. The tutorial for that part was a casualty of cutting two parts of the game together.

This has been my sole project for the five years. A *ton* of time goes into the story cinematics. It's already taken at least two years longer than I thought, but might as well try and do it properly.
