Sadly, that happens sometimes :(
I ran out of time to continue working on the procedural generation to avoid moments like this.
This was really fun! The hook mechanic is fun and I found myself playing around with it to see how much I could do with it. I guess the biggest complaint would be I wish there was a bit more! A more developed level and some polishing on the hook would make this game incredibly fun to play. Good job!
Like others have said, the beginning is a bit confusing. But once I figured out where to go, I thought it was pretty interesting. Random generation is always difficult and I applaud you for doing what you did with it in the time you had. With some tweaks, I could see this game's mechanic being really cool as a bigger game! Good job.
I enjoyed the game! I thought the art was well made and overall it was pretty fun. The movement was interesting though a bit unpredictable at times. The platforming was tricky but not impossible. I didn't quite understand the solar ray mechanic from the description alone. I enjoyed the game, though!
Wow, this game was awesome! The art and sound design were both very well done. Overall the experience of playing is very fun and easy. The mechanics work very well and there were only a few minor bugs I encountered (checkpoints not working or levels not ending after collecting all bananas). But considering how well the rest of everything works and how interesting the mechanic is, I am confident in saying you made a very good game!
A fun little game! I like the story premise, I thought the visuals were really cute and fun, and I think the mechanic of tying one of your vital resources to a movement ability is really interesting and I'd love to see this in a bigger game! I was a bit confused on what exactly was happening initially. I think adding some sound effects to taking damage or using your oxygen to jump would help really make those interactions feel more obvious. Overall though I think its promising and fun!
Thank you for your comment! I actually really agree about using ZXC. Initially the game had Z/C as rotate and X as place but through some limited playtesting, everybody told me they were using Q/E/Space + Arrow Keys. So I decided to remove the other controls, though I suppose I should have left them. If we continue this project, I will add a menu to select or rebind controls!
And I think a skip button would be helpful since the animation takes 10 seconds. Ill keep that in mind.
Again, thank you for your feedback!
Yes, that end track is my favorite! Our composer did a great job.
And yes, a tutorial was something I would have done with some more time.
I agree the art could communicate things a bit more clearly. However, we ran out of time. The water texture went through a few iterations and our artist actually made a new version of the water that I sadly didn't implement before submitting. If we ever make this game into a full release, the art will all likely be revisited for some tweaks!
The game progression and procgen of the rocks was something that was tweaked over and over and sadly didn't get enough tweaking. Before the final tweaks, you were able to reach the bottom of the map relatively easily and I wanted to keep the gameplay loop shorter which resulted in the current balancing which I agree needs some reworking. Its frustrating to run out of options to go down.
I'm curious what you mean regarding the audio matching the mood of the game, I'd like to hear more about that. I'll DM you about it!
The water meter also had some balancing issues that just needed more time to figure out all the way. Right now the game is balanced to always be short when I agree it should reward players who are able to move quickly! I really like the idea of a combo system.
A particle effect or some other way of communicating that water has been picked up would be very good. I considered an effect where water traveled up the roots after being collected but, again, not enough time :(
Thank you so much for your feedback! We both really appreciate you taking the time to play our game and provide insight. This was our first ever game so we learned a lot of lessons. If demand is high for us to continue working on Uproot, we now have a few ideas for some improvements to start with. Thanks!
Wow this game is kinda hard! I did enjoy it though. Got to the boss room and rage quit. But each of the enemies was very interesting and I liked how the mechanics were implemented. All in all, it was a fun game that kept me playing, despite the difficulty. I think having some music in the background would have elevated the overall experience significantly. Good game!
This was absolutely a really novel experience. The voice acting was incredible and the art and sound direction was very well done. The mechanics were simple, but for what the game was, they were all that was needed. I would love to see this as part of a larger story-focused game. Good work! And great take on the theme.
