Thank you so much for your time and considerable commentary.

I should acknowledge that my goal at the beginning of the jam was to explore adaptive music. Nothing more. The ideas within the story were not developed and the short timeframe resulted in a philosophical offering that, I admit, is rough. I also agree with your assessment of the relative strengths of the three paths.

I have already released a 2.0 which keeps the player in game where path completion here kicks them out. I wanted to deliver a 'win the mini-game, lose it all' gameplay abberation, but it turned out to be too meta.

If I were to develop it further I would probably eliminate the predetermined win state and allow for players to shape Norm as they would like, with a balanced result being just one of many possibilities. It could be modeled more like a personality quiz. As it is, having just one optimal state (balance) reflects a very personal belief system and is presumptuous on my part.

As for your critique of 2 and 3, you make excellent points. I'm not going to argue them. I'll only say that each path is derived from experiences very close to me.

Thank you again for your time. I sincerely appreciate the feedback.

Ciao!

Hi! I just wanted to let you know that I made a ver2.0 of this. I had to post it as a new project, since this one is still being reviewed by Ace. I've swapped out all menus for a coin-toss gameplay mechanic. I also changed it so that completion of a path no longer kicks you out of the game.

I think it improves the experience. In case you're interested - https://rkillen.itch.io/norms-face-20 Cheers!

Thank you so much for the very kind words! I am touched.

You'll find that most of my projects are as a composer. But I enjoyed this enough to consider working on more ren.py projects. Thank you again!

Yeah. I ended up making a separate 2.0 itch page for my updates so that I could enter the NaNoRenO jam with the new version. Not optimal, but you do what you have to. I'll follow you to get updates. Cheers!

I had a lot of fun playing that! I don't play a lot of platformers so it took me a bit to complete the level, and the traps really got me. Would love to have some audio behind it.

Nice job!!

That's really cool! I can't say I progressed very far, but it feels like I'll be able to with more time. Tt's very captivating, so I'll probably do that. Great job!!

Great job! I really enjoy playing that. Original idea. And an inspired response to the theme!

I'm hooked! Very fun!! It's a great puzzle, with fun graphics and well paced.

Audio would bring it up several notches. It begs for campy sound fx and an equally campy theme.

Wonderful game!

Great concept and art! The shift in messaging was really effective. I don't know what you have planned for this beyond the Jam, but it would be a worthy project to expand.

My game, Norm's Face, though very different, is also a personal journey. It was nice to find this here. Cheers!

I was a banker in my earlier life. So I really enjoyed your theme. Very original! Nice job.

The play model really grabs you once you get the hang of it! And I was really invested in the story.

I agree with others that this game has real potential. The mechanics and storyline work really well!

Great work!

I had to give this a try for the art. I LOVE the illuminated manu style!

I feel like all I need in order to progress is an understanding of what the "guess" field is looking for (name, number, color, ???). Or some combo? Any hints along those lines would have allowed me to cook with more purpose.

I did make it all the way to the "you lost" screen. >D

Also, I had to see what you submitted, as my own submission was inspired by the narrative aberration of Kafka's Metamorphosis. :-)

I really like this! Great entry. I got a 0 on my first try. Then it got harder.

I created a board game many, many years ago called Knots! which has very similar tiles. It was fun to play this and think about my own.

Really nice work on the images - start to finish! The final image is surprisingly compelling. Ciao!

Brilliant! This is a personal favorite! I grew up with the irl version of this and the experience was very similar!

Wonderful game! So glad I found it. Ciao!

Really beautiful and convincing!

I took me a bit to get the hang of the controls, but I can imagine how much fun it would be once I was comfortable with them to explore the galaxy.

Great game!

Well done! Great art and a compelling story. I really  like how you've implemented the combat.

Keep at it!

I was drawn to your game by the hand drawn thumbnail. Great job!

It's a fun puzzle with a great ending! Glad it checked it out.

I love the design! Very refreshing. And the narrative tone is a lot fun. Great job!

Excellent game! I'm not much of a platformer, so I didn't get very far. But it reminds me of Celeste, and the visuals and audio are top notch. Well done!

Wonderful on all counts! Loved the gameplay most of all. Simple enough for someone like me, but I can imagine it ramping up for more experienced players. Nice music and sounds. Great graphics.

Ticked all the boxes!

I love the vibe! The audio and and visuals are really solid and the the story is captivating!

I'm still figuring out how to limit my mana drops. I look forward to working my through the entire story!

Great job! And nice to see another renpy game. Ciao!

I really enjoyed that! Nice graphics. Smooth movement. A really tight game.

Great game!

Full marks! You've created a beautiful landscape. And the combat model is simple and intuitive. Great job!

That was fun! The web version worked fine for me.

Great premise. Love the audio. Had to laugh when I got eaten. Nice job!

Very nice! Beautiful art and a very compelling story. I hope you keep working on it!

I would love to hear a soundtrack for this. The ambiance is perfect for some moody tunes.

Great gameplay! Has a really classic feel and sound. Very, very well done!

I really enjoyed playing it. Ripped my heart out a few times and blew myself up a couple more, but still... lots of fun!

I also enjoyed climbing onto the walls to look for aberrations. Cheers!

Great story! I really got into it. I am impressed by the graphics and the UX you've implemented. I'll be taking a look at your code to see how you managed them.

Excellent game!

Very cool art style and a great story! I've gotten to a couple endings, including becoming pie. :D The music and audio work really well to maintain the mood throughout. And the story itself has lots of interesting twists.

Great work!

I love this!!

Your atmosphere is wonderful! Great choice of sfx. In my headphone the heartbeat/pulse is a bit overpowering. Had to turn them down. But that's a small thing.

The lighting is marvelous. The story is captivating.

The wave challenge is is a bit of a break in vibe, but it's a great challenge and the physics are really impressive. It took me a while to get through it, but it was an enjoyable effort.

Brilliant!
