There are rolls involved in the first Trial, yes. Actually, every time there is an active stat check, there's a roll. Not just in the trial.
Divination class is not worthless, even though its effects are not as easily perceived. Though it will become more useful in the future.

The First Trial is not finished yet, but once it is, losing in the first trial will just make the story go on, so that would hopefully make everything feel better. It is possible to win the first Trial, but yes, it should be difficult. And you definitely don't have to win to progress. Taking the third place is just another outcome.
