Please make it clearer that this is not an actual retro Game Boy game, but rather a modern game using a "retro" aesthetic. Also consider changing the tags.  Someone shouldn't get a computer game if they click on a "Game Boy" tag.

Thank you.

Since someone else mentioned a recent promo email, I'll ask what does this line mean:

"the game is free till I add the 5th boss. The current version of the game will then become the demo for the game after that."

If I download it now, is it the full game?  Will it work after the 5th?  If what's up now is the full game, why not make it claimable? What happens if people want to download (maybe again) afterwards?

I appreciate the promotion, but it's a little confusing, so please clarify.  Thank you.

The Windows version runs fine under Proton/WINE.  You could also try the Linux release of EasyRPG Player.

ah okay

bummer

Since the description is not exactly clear, is this a NES game ROM running in an emulator or a computer game made to look like a NES game?

(1 edit)

I'm not the game's dev, but I'll chime in to point out that NES games are easily emulated on Android.  Go that route for playing on the devices you mentioned.

Too bad it's not an actual PS1 game, but at least you make it clear it's "for Windows and macOS" upfront.

Thanks for replying.  However, what you said here is basically the same response I saw on the older posts I found (example).  So, regarding any updates, it seems the answer is "no."

At that point, will such a feature ever be implemented?  Is there even any effort going into it right now?

(1 edit)

Any chance this version will be listed on Steam?  I tried to purchase here at the sale price and got the infamous "minimum amount is 100 cents" error.  At this point it'd be easier for me to use my Steam wallet balance, even at full price.

(1 edit)

I went to purchase a game on sale for $0.50 (fifty cents) and when I tried to pay, was told the minimum allowed is 100 cents.

I looked for other games I might like, but couldn't find an "add to cart" button or similar to purchase multiple items on a single transaction.

I searched the forums and found multiple old posts (some from 3+ years ago) where this issue has been brought up.  Is there still no "shopping cart" feature on the site or did I miss something?

Thanks for answering.  The bit about the genre doesn't make a difference regarding my original question, but I appreciate the suggestion.

Thanks for answering.  Too bad the dev didn't make this clear.

Thanks for responding, I guess...... but that doesn't answer my question.

So is this an actual N64 ROM being emulated in the browser?  Or is it a HTML game made with N64-style graphics?

"I've never seen a homebrew game for any console on here that wasn't clearly identified as such."

I have.

I like the artstyle and am about to download the demo.  Steam Wishlist added!

I'm an end-user, not dev. My main complaint for itch is the search system.

I think more tags should be implemented (i.e. retro-inspired games vs games that can run on retro systems).

itch desperately needs a tag exclusion option other than an old workaround.  Example:  I like games featuring gay characters and a variety of subjects, but I do not want visual novels!  There's no easy way to filter them out, and the gay and LGBT+ tags seem inundated with that type of game.

Thank you for clarifying.  This is an example of how itch could initiate better tagging options, i.e. able to run on a retro console versus just being retro-inspired.

The title makes it sounds like it was made for the Nintendo 64, but then upon looking further I only see PC-oriented downloads.

Please put clearer language as to what this is.

Hello devs!  I have a question, and sorry if this has been asked before.  The page says this project supports exporting games to current-gen game consoles.  Is there any support for exporting to older consoles, such as the Super NES, PlayStation 1, or Dreamcast?

That's a convoluted way of asking the dev to make it claimable lol

Based on the "fix" (moving to the desktop folder), it sounds like the issue was the read/write permissions of your download folder or wherever else you were trying to perform the extraction.

Works fine for me.  Use 7-zip to extract.

I second the request of the "claim" option.

The lack of decent search functions has led me to be less likely to come here in general, just because of how annoying it is to try and find something of interest.  Lack of exclusion filters are a huge issue, and I agree with MossMisfit here.  The lack of updates is hard to overlook.

To use a personal example, as someone under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, the appeal of itch is that, in theory, games that are interest to me are more embraced here.  However, when it comes to actually find anything worthwhile (to me), the need to be able to narrow a search while filtering out stuff that seems so prevalent with that tag (i.e. visual novel), but not able to do so, makes having LGBTQ+ content almost meaningless.

The tag system definitely needs an overhaul, whether it's a streamlining of available tags, or expanding on current ones.  Example:  With the rise of games embracing a "retro" aesthetic, there needs to be the ability to filter between games that are just retro-inspired versus games that actually run on retro hardware.  Expecting people to wade through the plethora of low-poly tech demos tagged "retro" in the hope of finding something that would actually run on a PS1 (or similar dilemma) is basically asking people to have a bad user experience.

I like the premise of itch, and really hope it continues to do well.  However, there's no way I can recommend it in its current state.

Search exclusions need to be made a standard feature, not a URL edit that needs to be manually done, whipped up 5+ years ago, and doesn't work consistently.  Search tags also need to be expanded upon (i.e. retro-inspired vs games that run on retro hardware).  It's sad something so fundamental has yet to be implemented.

"I wonder what Firefox does"

It's made by Mozilla, not Google (Chrome is the most commonly used web browser).

(1 edit)

I've had issues running web games in Firefox (EDIT: even after disabling extensions), but Brave will run them fine.  No, I haven't compiled a list.  I prefer downloading and playing locally, so usually do that if available.

This game isn't on Steam.

Better search functionality (whether search exclusions, expanded tag options, etc) have been asked on here multiple times just in the last month.  Hopefully it's being worked on, but as of now it's a bit of a mess.

Depending on what's available, using 3rd party tools may be an option.  For example, since I got the Ukraine benefit bundle last year, I use Bundle Browser to find something I may be interested in from that

This is more of a "how to use a computer" type of question; does itch have a FAQ that would cover such things?

EDIT:  The FAQ has a mention of .zip files under the Creating section of the FAQ but I didn't find any section for helping end-users navigate different file types.

Anyway, .rar files are a type of compressed archive, similar to .zip and .7z files.  I personally suggest 7-Zip as it's cross-platform, open-source, and integrates well with menu items once installed.  You can use it to open .rar archives in addition to other types.

I also would like this feature, but I don't have much hope considering search exclusions haven't even been added as a standard feature.

The game's page is still up:

https://christopher-laino-games.itch.io/paranormal-buddies

However, access has been restricted.  From the page:  "This game has been restricted by the author and can not be downloaded. The owner of the page must give permission to those they wish to access the page."

My best guess is the author is reworking things and will probably re-release it when bugs or other things are fixed.

Have you tried contacting any devs from whom you bought games?  It'll probably depend on the game and/or developer what their policy is regarding re-issuing keys.

I was just looking at that old article and was about to ask on any updates.  I implore those in charge to implement this feature.  It is hard to find things I want to play, let alone suggest to others to use itch, when such basic functions like search exclusions aren't supported.

I just saw that email and wasn't sure what it was.  So I guess I missed out then :-(

The only platform listed in the description for this game is Windows.  I get wanting options, but not all games on itch are made for multiple platforms.

EDIT:  I just looked at the game's page on Steam, and there are versions for Linux and MacOS.  My bad.  I wonder why all versions aren't available here, since they exist on other stores.

Sorry for the late reply!  I played for a little bit it seems softer on the eyes.  When I get a chance I'll do a little more playing to compare it with the v1.0 version to see if I can get you a better description

EDIT:  So, I feel silly  😛  My comment was me going by memory.  I re-downloaded v1.0 and switched between that and 1.1.  to better compare.  v1.1 is MUCH easier on the eyes.  I haven't played any extended sessions, but I am convinced v1.1 would be the version to use for that.  Thanks again!
