The game is written in GML. I never used lua so I'm not sure how practical a conversion to it would be. It would definitely be easier to port MKF to modern gamemaker than any other engine though. That being said, we have no plans to port the game to another engine because of the large amount of time and effort it would take. Perhaps someone else will be up to the task once we release the source code after the game's completion, however.

Thank you for your concern but I think we're willing to take the risk of finishing MKF in its intended form. Reskinning a single playable character (power-ups and all) is already an enormous task. Reskinning everything Nintendo related is downright unrealistic unless a lot of time and money was involved (neither of which we have). Regardless, we don't have any interest in swapping out everything owned by the Big N.
MKF will never be monetized in any shape or form. It's a passion project made by fans for fans. Setting up a patreon page is a sure-fire way to get C&D'd.
The Big N has much bigger targets to shoot down like Super Smash Flash 2 and Super Smash Bros Crusade. Both of these have been around for years and no action was taken against them. In the extremely off chance that we do get C&D'd, well, I'll take that over completely altering the game's identity.
