ah, sorry about that. The version of the game you're playing is outdated.
The map got a complete overhaul and redesign. And the letter pieces could be collected .
As for this area, the steps to get out of here is to press your down and jump button and dash away from the spikes.
Next you need to find the three eye monsters in the area and kill them to get rid of the giant gate blocking your way at the start of Twilight Grove, the area you're in right now.
Next all you need to do is head West, then Northwest respectively. You can explore the other surrounding areas though.
As for the recent update on the game, it's currently available on Steam with all the issues fixed.
Sorry for the inconvenience. π
Also, here is a picture of a portion of the map for the demo so far, hopefully it helps.
Thank you, and I'm glad you enjoyed The InBetween. π
Regarding the vertical dash tutorial, you are absolutely right. I tweaked the Fleetfoot shrine to force people to dash upwards(people can still dash through it for speedrunning sakeπ). Unfortunately, the version of the game with that update and more are currently on steam. I forgot to add it here. Sorry.π₯²
As for the parry, there are a few kinks i need to iron out from there. I also plan to add a shrine containing an optional miniboss that will teach players how to parry, at least to lesson the unfamiliarity.π
The Pixl mode battles(undertale-gameplay) have been uncharted waters, so there will be more of that, however i was considering not making too many of them for now. So you'll mostly see that in boss fights.π
About the shooting... you have a valid point about the mashing the shoot button causing a bit of a fatigue, I guess I never really noticed it since I have fast fingers on a keyboard. But i did find it tiring on a controller.π€
Maybe I'll provide an option to hold the shoot button to fire constantly to make things more comfortable.π
Regardless, thanks for playing and for the awesome feedback.ππ₯
Sorry about that.
In The InBetween you can dash in 4 directions.
Up, down, left and right.
You can also perform a triple dash as long as you dash without getting off the floor.
The goal after getting the dash is to climb to the top of Aluna mountain.
You can check your map with Tab.(forgot to update the game here, sorryπ )
Lastly, when in doubt, dash. You can perform different patterns when dashing here.
One more thing, later in the game, if a stranger tells you to jumo off a cliff, think about it, cuz actions have consequences here.
From light to severe.πππΎ
Good luck, and glad you're enjoying the game so far.πππΎ
Hello there.
For starters, the game is perfectly safe. I get the feeling it easily flags zip files as malicious since it can't scan them. Happened to me a few times. :)
Second, sorry for the sidetrack but I strongly suggest you get the game's demo on Steam.
Not only is it considered a safer alternative to your PC, but it currently has the latest bug fixes and updates.
Thank you. ππΎ

Dude, first of all, calm down.
I get that the game's quality is..... questionable at best, but isn't it too early to jump the gun?
What if this is the dev's first game? We all learn via trial and error in our own way, so being this harsh is completely uncalled for.
Especially that last part about having to "rethink your game dev journey".
Plus, it's a game jam, and there is nothing wrong with using existing assets as long as the dev have the rights to use them and as long as they weren't stolen.
Sheesh.π
Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain community Β· Created a new topic Gameplay is torture on a keyboard.
Yes I know the usual line, that certain games are best played with a controller. Sadly I'm more of a keyboard gamer, I enjoyed the 2d Celeste on a keyboard, and even with that I still had to remap the controls to suit my taste. This one does not have that and the result? Painful gaming.
I love the visuals in Celeste 64, and the vibes I got from this and it does look exciting to enjoy for the 6th anniversary. But Please in the name of all the berries in the world, ADD REMAPPABLE CONTROLS!!!
This was an awesome experience. Props to the artist, did a wonderful job with the art style and aesthetic appeal. The gameplay was also quite tight and easy to hop into at any time, not to mention the music. 100% worth being a part of my playlist!
In terms of issues, the only thing that ticked me off a little was the fact that if you make a mistake in solving the puzzles, there's a strong chance of getting stuck. That's what i encountered twice in level 3, the windmill stage. It would have been nice to have a restart from last checkpoint button in the menu instead of quitting to the main menu, opening level 3 again and starting from the very beginning.
But, that still didn't dampen the experience, it was a tad tedious, but the fact that i was still really eager to see the game all the way to the end says a lot.
So, give yourselves a huge pat on the back, you made a really awesome game and I can totally seeing this sail to greater heights in the future! π
Thanks.... and you were right, I should have added more depth to the background to increase readability, sorry about that.
Also, that's a good point about the whole going back to the menu after the 4th death. I'll make sure to remove that after the jam.
Then that glitch........ I still wonder how that escaped my sights.π
Lastly, thanks for taking the time to play my game, and I'm glad you liked it, despite not being able to finish.ππΎ
Okay, first of all....
That was Fast!
Yet it was still fun. Those angler fishes of the deep are also relentless, really made me put enough pressure on my keyboard. ;P
But, it was a really short yet fun game. Wish more stuff could be added, but i guess that can be done after the jam. looking forward to more stuff from ya. π
I'll keep that in mind. Once again, thanks for the feedback. ππ
Also.... this is just between you and me, but I left some cheats in the game.
if you press the number one key on your keyboard(not the numerpad) and restarted the game from the main menu, you'll start from the very first level.
If you press numberpad 9, you'll skip to level 5, numberpad 6 will let you skip to the last level. π
itch.io Community Β» Game Development Β» Get Feedback Β· Created a new topic Looking for Feedback on My UnderTale-Inspired Metroidvania; The InBetween
Hello.
I'd just released an alpha build of my latest project; The InBetween. But I'd really love some feedback before I advance further on the project.
For now, I'm mainly seeking feedback in the following categories:
Graphics: Does the game look or feel pleasant to take a look at? Does it convey the mood of the story well?
Sound: Is the music enjoyable? Does the sound effect need some work?
Gameplay: Does the controls feel good to play with on keyboard or a controller? Is it fun enough to keep you invested?
Design and
Errors/bugs: Anything unusual that you feel was not supposed to happen?
That's all for now, the criteria might change but for now, these are the things I'm looking for feedback about.
I would deeply appreciate it if you took your time to play the game and dropped some thoughts or suggestions.
Thanks and hope you have fun!

An Undertale-inspired 2d Metroidvania
Hello everyone. I'm VCD, a solo game developer and I would like to present to you my latest game project; The InBetween.
The InBetween is an episodic 2d action-adventure platformer where players take on the role of a young boy named Pipit, who finds himself on a quest to save the world of Aija from deadly Vir or… END IT.
The game hopes to be an action and story packed fusion of a metroidvania and Undertale. You might call it...
An UnderVania! (*Ba-Dum... TSS! π)
It's still an alpha build with a decent amount of bugs and incomplete areas, but I would really appreciate some feedback. π
Thank you, and have fun in advance! π
