Thank you for submitting the game. The team had a very hard time playing your game, due to the lack of feedback to the player.

What do each of the different items placed do, and how do the cats interact with them?

In the future, try keeping this type of single-map game to a single screen, even with relatively smaller graphics, to allow the players to better understand the room.

Chonky BoiSimple game play and appealing graphics meant we could see this being used as an educational tool for school childrenEffective realisation of De-Chonking theme. There could have been better articulation of the negative consequences for the cat to being overweight, not just the player being penalised, but overall good. Liked the additional positive cat care messaging (such as toys, litter trays etc.) contained in the artwork, not necessarily part of game play. Would suggest modifying some of the characteristics of the 'sad' Chonki Boi at the beginning a little, as ears look more suggestive of a Fold (specific breed). Liked the different games extending game play. Appealing enough for the target audience mentioned in 'potential'Nicely-presented artwork and a creative  and thoughtful response to the elements contained in the themes.

Purrty TimePreferred the first round game to the second round. 1st round is effective, but not much potential for development in its current format. The De-Chonking theme was well articulated, and we liked the clear presentation of positive and negative foods. Liked the clear cause - effect link in the conveyer belt round. Weren't keen on the cat accessories, or the behaviours displayed in the treadmill round. Concerns around representation of breeds that Cats Protection do not recommend. Control issues in the first round made us not enjoy the gameplay very much, although the representation with the foods and idea behind it is to be commended. Liked the adoption of 'choose your fighter'. Would have preferred this to be based on differences in cat characteristics (e.g. just stick to colours), rather than breed

The Good, The Bad and The KittensThis was a fun game. I could picture it as a mobile game with progressively harder levels, more obstacles being introducedThe wanderer theme was there, but wasn't effective in communicating the importance of micro chipping. Suggestion of replacing lasso with microchip scanner, drone etc.. The cats were depicted fineLoved the dog disguised as a cat. Not entirely sure what the 'point' of the game was. Nice gameplay

Game NameThe team did not see where this game would be able to develop further, even with say, 3 more months going into it. Family Planning theme in evidence, and the chaotic exponential growth of cats articulated the need for this theme. Limitless growth diluted the effectiveness of game play and therefor impact of messagingGeneric cats were represented okayIt looks cute, but not engaging enough to make a long-lasting impactIt was a game that made us all feel very panicky when the cats kept multiplying, points for that.

CommuniCatGame is easily accessible to broad range of people, possible to play online or in person. Simple for CP to recommend without the need of additional equipment of game experienceStuck closely to the Ain't misbehavin' theme, the only submission that addressed this theme. Misunderstanding cat behaviour is a key driver in unnecessary re-homing and addressing this to a broad audience is really important Good choice of cat behaviours on the cards - maybe the tummy rub needs more thought? The visual language was creative and memorable

Appreciated the thought and care in this game: inclusive , environmentally conscious, not reliant on language.

Game Name
Cattack the BlockUnfortunately, bugs in the gameplay made it difficult to assess. The premise set We admired the effort that had gone into the development of the AI catsMost closely fitted the 'wanderer' theme, though didn't go far enough to articulate the cat care need contained in this theme. Liked that it shows that cats are territorial and that in densely populated areas fights can occur. We weren't keen on aggressive behaviour being a key gameplay component. Cats all have very dilated pupils.Difficult to comment in its current stage of completionReminded me of a cross between Pacman and the pencil and paper game 'boxes'

We could see possible applications against a number of CP objectives: Brand engagement / awareness, public education, fundraising. Potential for additional levels, with carrying over positive consequences for actions taken (e.g. more cats = more donation = additional resources such as more drivers/vans/)Could be expanded with customisationGood realisation of 'The Wanderer' Theme. Liked that non-chipped cats were harder to return to owners than chipped cats. The deadline driver wasn't such a great fit, it would be better to achieve objective, with grading of achievement based on time taken for exampleLiked that most of the depictions were of moggies.Fun to play, engaging, and effective in communicating the cat care messageHad Overcooked / Moving Out vibes, but was a well thought-out response to the brief

Hi everyone,

We are happy to share some resources from Cats Protection on cat representation:

Hello jammers!

We're back with the second Cats Protection Q&A, which can be found here:

We discuss cat representation, drawing, animation and judging criteria for the jam.

Hello jammers!

Today we had our first chat with the folks from Cats Protection, and we discussed:

  • Why each theme is important to them
  • How each theme can be approached as a game developer
  • Tips from Russ, Cats Protection's animator from their media team

And we also talked a bit about how each theme can inspire us.

You can see the full video below, and do join us on Discord to ask questions and show us your progress, that we will then take forward into the next chat with CP (with Donna, Russ and vet Sandra) on Wednesday from 2:30PM BST.

Hi everyone!

Thank you all who joined the jam. It's now been one day since we announced the themes for this jam, and they are:

  • The De-Chonking
  • Ain't Misbehavin'
  • Feline Family Planning
  • The Wanderer

We hope that these will inspire you, you can find a lot more information about the themes on the main jam page, and if you want to join us in discussing the themes or finding a team, you can join us on Discord.

Yup, that's correct. Use whatever engine you want, as long as we can play it on a Windows PC, web browser, or Android phone (we don't have access to too many Macs unfortunately so no iOS or MacOS submissions pls)
