Engine is failing to start.

I apologize for blowing these forums up with so many questions, I've a new dilemma.

I wanted to install the game on my laptop as well for when I travel. I have it running fine on my home PC, but when I try to install it on my laptop the engine pops up and I get some messages in the dialog. I took a screen shot to show what's going on.

I've tried reinstalling the engine multiple times, even tried re-downloading it from the source thinking I had a bad download. I've made sure my Direct X is upadted, also tried the 32 and 64 shortcuts as well as the DX8 ones.

If you are absolutely sure that the paths for the shortcut point to the correct spot, error 126 can also possibly be caused by missing VC runtimes, so make sure that the correct vc_redist.x64 or vc_redist.x86 is installed for you system; 64 bit is vc_redist.x64 and 32 bit is vc_redist.x86.

Thank you as always for responding.  I tried upadting my c++ with the latest vc_redist.x64 as suggested, still getting it.

My current path is C:\Maelstrom

I've got ERAS2 in it's own folder under games. C:\Maelstrom\Games\ERAS

So my shortcut currently looks like this.

What operating system is this?

Hmmm, a bit more googling...it doesn't happen to be an AMD chipset does it?  This seems a common thing with AMD from what I can gather...possibly driver-related.

It's a Win 10 OS. It's just my low end laptop I mostly use for writing and surfing, but I was able to get SD: to each his own, to run on it, so I figured this would work as well since it's based on COAS.

Not quite sure about this one...from what I read online, it could be a dependency issue missing or an authority to read a dependency, or a driver incompatibility.

Let's try authority first.  Can you right-click the shortcut and Run as administrator.

If that doesn't work, try copying the Maelstrom.exe and the modules folder into the C:\Maelstrom\Games\ERAS directory and instead of the shortcut, just try launching the Maelstrom you copied from that spot in the ERAS folder?

Do either work?

(1 edit)

No such luck. I tried running as admin and still encountered it. I also tried moving the files as suggested and still get it when I try to run maelstrom.exe directly from the folder instead of the shortcut.

OK, it looks like that laptop comes with a GeForce 940MX.  Many of the posts I see about this particular error also suggest possible driver issues, and suggests a reinstall/update of the graphic drivers.  Another possibility is anti-virus software, and if that is running, maybe try disabling it for this process temporarily to see if that is the cause.  I really don't know the exact answer, because this is the first I've seen of this error, so I'm just searching the internet for the possible reasons.   Given all these modules that are failing have specific links to DirectX 9, I figured if you have DirectX 9.1c43, and performed the DXSETUP to be sure it was there, it would solve the issue, but that appears to be an invalid assumption.

Okay, well I tried disabling my anti-virus and that didn't work. I also checked my DirectX which is currently 12, so I assume that isn't it. My laptop doesn't have a GEForce 940MX, I looked it up with dxdiag and it says I have Intel HD  Graphics 620.

Yes, your computer has DX12, but the game uses 9.1c43, but that DXSETUP is supposed to verify that.  I don't know if it works for Win10 to make sure though...we have 3 Win10 computers here and the game works for them, so I don't think we ever ran DXSETUP to see whether it updates or not for the newer systems; it's pretty much for systems that don't have the latest DX9.  Presumably Win10 already has it.

Could you try a driver update for HD 620?  https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/96551/Intel-HD-Graphics-620

Another thing we could try is to search for the file  D3dx9d_43.dll on your machine in the Windows directory and delete them (there are probably 2 of them, in different subfolders on Win10...to be safe you could just move them to a place for safekeeping, in case the setup does not recreate them), then download and run https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35.  Extract the files to a directory, run DXSETUP.

Heyyyy that did it! The drivers were all up to date, apparently I just needed to install DX9 despite having a newer version.

I've not tried play testing it, but it gets past the engine screen and onto the title screen. You really went above and beyond with your help, I want to tell you I'm very thankful!

Wow, I'm so glad, because frankly it was a complete mystery, and I really had no idea what to do; never seen that issue before and I don't think anybody else has either, that I've heard of.  Just lots of googling and "maybe this?" LOL  Glad you got it working on that laptop.
