Every time I go to open the daily puzzle it's blank no matter what I do. If you get interrupted you lose your progress.
Yes, if it takes too long to come up with a guess (I play in hard mode). I have a job. I used to have an old dog who would need immediate attention at times. I might get a phone call. There are plenty of reasons one gets interrupted in the middle of playing a puzzle. Who can afford to commit 100% of their time and attention to a puzzle until it's done?
