Overuse of Trigger Warnings

Hello everyone. I've noticed that, in a large proportion of games I see, there is a trigger warning even though it is unnecessary. Trigger warnings for more intense content are acceptable but just because there is some blood in your game does not mean it needs a trigger warning. When they are used in mild games I am often left disappointed.

Here are some problems with overused trigger warnings:

  • They promise something that isn't really present in the game
  • They look unprofessional, especially when abbreviated to "TW"
  • They can disturb the player more than if they never saw one
  • They take up valuable space on your game page; every word matters when selling your concept
  • They remove an element of surprise if they are too specific

There is no need to use a trigger warning to protect yourself from liability, and if you make the aesthetic of the game page fit the content then the player should get the point.

Yours truly

In some games it feels like some devs just do trigger warnings to build up tension or as a marketting strategy... In lots of the cases I don't even understand why there was a trigger warning in the first place...

Depends on your target audience. And if you have lots of "accidental" players. The obvious trigger warning is the adult tag. So minors would not even see your game in the first place.

Trigger warnings for a horror game .... well, insert that's what I am here for   meme.

I think you might need the epilepsy trigger warning for flashing lights.

And some content will trigger very bad responses from players, especially if it were a thing that they would have avoided the game for, if they had known. (Please do not add a list. People might google stuff they regret. ;-)

Epilepsy warnings are really good to have. Even though I don't have epilepsy myself, I've noticed that flashing lights can be very annoying if they go on for too long.

I totally agree with you. Although I do not suffer from epilepsy, the continuous flashing lights give me strong annoyance (and headaches). Except for very particular cases, I do not find that these effects add much to a game and I would recommend avoiding them altogether, where possible.
