If it's a .rar file, you need to extract the file contents. You can either right click and choose extract, or manually open the file and drag out the contents. You need a program that can open .rar files, though I think windows automatically comes with one (if you're using windows). If not, download Winrar. It's free.

After extracting the file, there will probably be an exe inside you can run.

my win com said it is not a valid .rar file ?_?

Hm, I've never encountered that before, so I'm not sure what is wrong... maybe contact the game developer and see if their download happen to be broken? Which game are you trying to download?

You could also try downloading it again in case something went wrong when you downloaded the file.

Running off the back of this...
I too have noticed an uptick in the number of games packed into .rar

At first I was thinking it might just be trying to cram a large file into an acceptable size.

However, I wonder if there might be something else to it. Such as developers putting passwords onto their .rar or perhaps trying in an attempt to evade the server's automated antivirus scanning?

Well, not sure if you refer to rar specifically or any compressed format but you can also put passwords on zip files.

If people are trying trying to use rar to compress it even more, there are certain zip models that surpass rar, they could also do 7z or KGB in that case, but I guess nobody would know how to open them...

Yeah, in anyway rar seems a quite weird choice nowadays.

It's what people know about because so many Windows computers come with WinRAR preinstalled, and they don't know any better. :-(

yeah that's true but nowadays I do think both zip and rar are already natively supported by windows if I'm not mistaken

If you're right, then we'll never be rid of the format again.
