Can't decide on genre

My next game is really simple. You simply guide a mouse around a loop. It's hardly an action game, but it isn't a puzzle game either. Maybe "other".?

How should I decide? Or, what constitutes an action game? because I keep thinking COD like.. which this definitely is not

Your thoughts?

- thanks

Based from the description I would say maybe Relaxing? Zen, Simple, Casual, or perhaps even Skill-based?

I assume you mean which genre you need to select from itch.io's dropdown list.

I'd pick strategy - because guiding a mouse requires strategy.

(Itch.io lacks certain categories.)

Yeah, from the dropdown list. I'll go with Strategy.

I had a similar question for my game too, what I did was:  search & filter in all possible (and applicable) genres in itch and count how many games that show up in the first 4 rows are somehow related to yours (or resemble in a gameplay perspective).

It depends on how exactly you guide the mouse. If you guide it by luring it with your cursor, action might be the genre. If you guide it by placing arrows, puzzle is the genre.

In general, how you play the game also defines the genre.

🤣  I'm moments away from taking it out draft and you all got me re-thinking again.

It's online now. I put it under Action. There should be a "Casual Action" category.

Please check it out.

Thanks.

I played it, it's a puzzle game to me. It's nice, the level design is on point! I played maybe 4 or 5 levels before I stopped.
