PS5 controller is bugged out and unplayable

The game recognizes a PS5 controller right out of the box, major points for that, and it mostly works, but the X, square and circle buttons are mismatched and the R-stick is stuck to top at neutral, so while the controls can be remapped with a little difficulty, the game is unplayable as you can't aim. Also the D-pad doesn't do anything by default and movement is all on the L-stick, despite the prompts claiming otherwise.

Hey, sorry you're running into control issues! Most often, control binding problems like this are because of Steam's controller configuration tool interfering and causing problems - even if you aren't running the game through Steam. Before anything else, try these two options:

-Go into Steam Settings and turn off "Enable Steam Input for Playstation Controllers", then reboot steam for good measure, before launching the game
-Close Steam entirely before launching the game

If neither of those work, then it's likely a compatibility issue with the engine I'm using, Game Maker Studio 1 (specifically 1, not 2), which ceased development before the PS5 came out. If that is the case, then your best bet would be to either use a program like DS4Windows to remap the controller to something the game can recognize correctly, OR run the game through Steam intentionally as a Non-Steam Game (you can rename it, if you don't want your Steam friends to know what you're playing) to take advantage of Steam's gamepad input remapping capabilities.

Sorry again you ran into problems with this - ever since Steam introduced their gamepad input systems, it's been a constant source of frustration and headaches and there's literally nothing I can do about it as a developer. I hope one of the above methods is able to fix the problem, though!

Thanks for the reply. DS4Windows didn't fix the issue when I tried. I'll try shutting down Steam first and then maybe running through steam if that changes anything.

I did some more trying out and neither running with steam shut down or running through steam fixed the issue. Running without steam and DS4Win, the game didn't recognize the controller at all. All the other combinations of Steam and DS4Win had the same aiming issue. But I did discover that going to stationary aiming mode will lock the aim down. You can still aim to 45 degrees  in either case though. And I kinda feel your pain if it's in the engine and not in your hands... I'll try mouse&keyboard, that's the way I played the 2019 demo way back when, which I really liked.

I know it's been a while, but DS4Win has a setting now where it disguises the Dualsense/PS5 as a DS4, and Game Maker actually recognizes the DS4 controller.

In case you can't find it in DS4Win, I created a new profile, and it opened a popup asking if I wanted to configure the PS5 controller as an Xbox controller or a DS4.  Pick DS4, make sure the controller you're using is set on that profile, and you're done.

Now I'm gonna go find out if this works on a bunch of other games that seem to hate the PS5 controller.

Late reply as well. But I did discover the setting independently, when mucking about with Genshin impact. Didn't occur to try it with Crisis point, though.
