The latest version of the Heroes of Adventure Players Handbook has now been publicly released and can be downloaded for free here https://nameless-designer.itch.io/heroes-of-adventure-players-handbook

This book contains all the information a player need to create and manage their characters (heroes) in the Heroes of Adventure game.

The key changes from the previous version includes.

  • Revised (and faster) character creation (The "ABC method" i.e. Ancestry, Background, Class). It now takes 5 mins to create a hero.
  • Expanded ancestries and reverted to traditional names.
  • Rationalised classes to 10 but added 4 class options each.
  • Added "Inspiration" statistic, a pool of points which are spent on spells and ability use.
  • Layout, art and presentation updated.
  • Lots of rule tweaks, edits and balancing.
  • Spells and spell system refined.
  • Experience Point system simplified.

Thanks to everyone who reviewed, commented, tested and provided feedback on the revised Players Handbook.

Thank you again for continuing to revise this great game!

Every new release from the Nameless designer brings such joy.

This new release was so unexpected. I have so many comments and questions

May I ask what the impetus was for this new update?  If you have time I would also like to hear some of your thoughts behind the changes in the new version.

I feel the changes in classes are like welcome revisits to first edition character creation. I chuckled a little when reading that classes were rationalized to 10 (with 4 class options) at first it seemed like the twenty classes from 2nd edition had been reduced to a mere forty :P

I have rolled up several characters in this new version and it is indeed very fast and generates very diverse and interesting characters. A Halfling storyteller turned Bounty Hunter? A Discredited Giant Blooded Historian, now  a Gladiator. At first it seemed a bit too simple compared to the previous edition. especially with those old background creation tables. In fact this generates  a wider variety with less effort required to invent or make sense of the implied backstory story, This way it almost writes itself. Very elegant. Reminds me of your Ancient Weapon Generator.

I very much appreciate the new Beastman ancestry as I have  player who insisted to be an orc rogue. We used the stats from the monster manual as a base to replace the normal race choices and improvised form there. But the addition of also giant and goblin kinds was inspired. I wonder if we might look forward more new monstrous ancestries at some point, perhaps in a refurbished dusty dragon inn? Would be fun to see Lizard folk, Gnomes or even Goatmen (Minotaurs?) show up. Dragonkin might be popular too I suppose. But Six is plenty for now.

I have a few more observations but I'll save them for another post.
Oh! One last questions... why isn't page 48 the new cover art?

Thanks for the wonderful new edition!

Hey Hapshant, thanks for taking the time to post.

Heroes of Adventure is a constantly evolving system as I continue to playtest and tweak this along with an improvement in my own layout and presentation skills. In terms of the key thinking behind version 3.

  • I wanted to streamline and rationalise the system to make it as easy as possible to play.
  • I definitely wanted to streamline the character creation system (the current ABC, Ancestry, Background and Class choices with fixed starting benefits mean characters can be created in 5 minutes).
  • I wanted to introduce the 'inspiration' system to give players a simpler and more flexible way to use spells/abilities.
  • General layout and presentation improvements.
  • Reverted to some classic names (Elf, Dwarf). HoA is a homage to classic fantasy adventure games I wanted to revert to that theme.
  • Will definitely be revising the core rulebooks (Players, Referee, Monsters books) not sure on the supplements yet.

There's a small friendly discord community here if you want to chat about the game further. I also post draft versions of upcoming releases for feedback.

nameless designer will the compendium be updated with the newest players handbook and newest monster compendium?

The Referee's Guide needs to be updated first (and this may be an update and expansion) so a while away yet. Not sure whether I will update the Compendium or just close it down as it will be out of date.

thank you!

Looks great. Just getting back to my running HoA game tonight and surprised/pleased/happy to see the new version. This system is quickly becoming my players favorite - easy, straight forward and pretty lethal. We've added some house rules and it's always a pleasure to run as a GM.

Great work!

Developer

Hey thanks for taking the time to post. What house rules have you applied out of interest?

We've modified the skill list a bit, For damage the players roll both their associated stat die (str for a sword, sen for a bow, etc) and take the better result, mastercraft armor has DR, range penalties or bonuses - a bunch of minor stuff.

Twelve sessions after last night so it's officially a campaign I suppose.

Any timeline on the updated Referees Guide?

Developer

Hey @rkhigdon, it's next on the list of books to update but real life is getting in the way. Probably likely to have a draft out by Xmas but don't hold me to that.

thanks for the update!
