Does a better roll20 exist yet?

Roll20 is a good service but damn if it doesn't feel like driving a boat down a suburban street trying to get it to work.

Is there a better alternative for ttrpgs online?

It's free and works on the more popular browsers, without a client, which is is why it survives despite the fact it steers like a cow.

Fantasy Grounds costs money and requires downloading a client.  It's the primary alternative you hear about. No go if you're poor or have an OS they don't support.

Google turned up this thing: https://www.rptools.net/ ... It's free and while it requires downloading the tool, but it's a java client so it should run various systems, and they have a Discord for support. I haven't tried it so I can't vouch for it, but it sounds better than any alternative I've seen so far.

I mean, I assume you've been here, but I haven't heard much about any of these other tools.

I've used RP tools before. IMO the interface makes Roll20 look feel like a sports car. Not to mention I always had problems connecting people to the tabletop.

It's clunky and really designed for stuff like DnD type games first. That said, after about 200 hours across various games and reading the documentations every few months, I finding Roll20 to be pretty good overall. It does everything to some extent, even if it doesn't do it all well. (especially cards! Gah the card features are so limited!) I'd really love a better alternative, but am glad at least something like it exists.

As for alternatives? I know some folks actually use Tabletop Simulator.
