Hello, I'd like to hear a bit from participants of game jams for a project i'm thinking about. I only have a couple of questions via text. If you have time answer here directly or send me a DM on discord at "sauce.found". Thank you!

1) What do you think would help improve your game development skills the most? Is a GameJam the right way and if so why?
2) Would you like to have experts at your group's "disposal" during the gamejam?
3) What would you like to see more at a GameJam?
4) What do you think would be the best way to make people meet people to build teams?

1. I do think that Game Jams are one of the best ways to improve your GameDev skills, as they allow you to actually finish games and work under a set and unchangeable deadline.

2. I never have had experts to help during a game jam... but I think that might help instead of constantly scrolling through Reddit or Stack overflow for solutions.

3. Browser games definitly do better at a game jam, because they are more accessible. The more polish the better. I find the best thing would be a level-based game with 5-10 levels and a decent amount of polish. If you talk about hosting a game jam, I would like to see ways to make participants think outside the box, like vague themes or constraints that force them to do better.

4. Definitely use the community function to create a team building community so people can join up.

Hope this helps!

Thank you a lot!

Use the jam community to build a team, usually you want someone that will teach you or someone you can teach.

1) What do you think would help improve your game development skills the most? Is a GameJam the right way and if so why?

To improve game dev skill what you need to do is game dev. So Gamejam is great way to do it cause aside you have to create a game (mostly from not-so-nothing) , you have time limit to push yourself to complete your game within time limit.

But of course, people could cheat despite the rules but it's their loss if the jam had no prize rewards.

2) Would you like to have experts at your group's "disposal" during the gamejam?

Which experts? since gamejams have time limit, I'd need experts which could make stuffs within time limit so they could be used in the submitted game.

3) What would you like to see more at a GameJam?

Well, a team of professional judges to judge and rate the submitted games. This is to get fair and unbiased rating and judgement.

4) What do you think would be the best way to make people meet people to build teams?

I don't work in team so I can't give proper answer to this.

Thank you, appreciate it!

Use a jam to get noticed, especially if you can manage to score in the top 10-20% of those jams.  My number of views went from a token amount to almost 5000 within a year.

Also, the larger the jam is, the smaller your game should be.  People often only have a week to review as many games as they can, so time is very limited.  Assume they have 15-20 minutes tops, which should be enough to either beat the game or make a decent amount of progress  and leave a desire for them to want to return.  Don't make my mistake and submit a jam entry that takes 2 1/2 hours to beat: NO ONE HAS THAT SORT OF TIME with a ratings / review deadline.
