Thank you for downloading and hopefully playing Zestre. This game was born out of the idea that most Eastern European tales and folklore are spooky or scary. My final goal would be to create a series of puzzle / escape the room games that centre around old traditions and tales from this region of the world. With each game I hope to deliver quality gameplay content in a story centric puzzle game.

But first I need your help to learn how to better write & showcase a story! How? Just write your thoughts. Any feedback or comment would get me closer to become a better designer! So, if you have any idea about Zestre, please let me know. :)

Thank you for taking the time to play this. Cheers!

This was very remeniscent of Cube Escape games by Rusty Lake.  Overall I enjoyed it!  Good luck!

Rusty Lake was a huge inspiration for this game. Great to hear that you enjoyed it!

Thank you :)

Super enjoyable, not too difficult or easy!

Thank you! I'm very glad to hear you found the difficulty to be balanced :)

Multumesc pentru sugestie, chiar as vrea sa integrez asta in urmatoarea versiune. :)

Winterlore is beautiful. It brings me back to the Flash escape room games I played as a kid--Winterlore captures the quiet eeriness of being trapped alone in a room and not knowing what could happen next. Combine this with beautiful graphics, Eastern European/Balkan/Romanian inspired folklore, and subtle sound design, and it makes me want more! The old lady at the window legitimately sent a chill down my spine, and I almost felt like she would find a way into the house if I messed up.

Overall, this game was deeply satisfying and enjoyable to play through. The difficulty level was perfect for me as well--I only had to refer to the walkthrough once when I got stuck. And I double appreciate that you included an official walkthrough video so I didn't have to dig for an unofficial one! :^)

Really cool game! As others have mentioned, the atmosphere is very similar to Rusty Lake, even down to the slightly unnerving feeling as you progress through the game. I personally loved how the room would change the more you completed the requirements. That, along with the chilling wind sound, kept me on edge the whole time, so if you're planing on continuing work on this or on a sequel, I'd definitely encourage you to keep that sort of tension in :)

Also, it was a very pleasant surprise to see that this game is based on romanian folklore! The fact that the screenshots of the room looked very similar to what you'd find in romanian museums, the original name of the game "Zestre" and the name "Mamaie" Hristova made me ask whether this was about romanian folklore and it's really cool to see that it is!

The only (small) negatives I can think of are that sometimes the historical information feels a little too much like exposition text and not like something the caracter would say, and the text boxes. I would prefer if you would click on an object to open the first text and then the following clicks would advance the text. As it is now I didn't know at the beginning that I was missing some information because I didn't click on the object multiple times.

But even with those small gripes, the game is still great and I'm really looking forward to see what you guys work on next!

Thanks a lot for the kind words, we're happy you've enjoyed playing Winterlore!

We actually thought about if we should keep the text boxes continuous or isolated. We settled on the latter as we didn't want to force people into too long of an exposition dump, haha! But we do understand the grievances so we'll keep them in mind for our next episode!

Seconding what AndreiT above said re: text boxes, though ultimately it comes down to personal preference. It might also be useful to add a generic ‘can’t use this here’ message for when a player tries to use the wrong inventory item (possibly with hints for multiple steps puzzles?). As it is you get the same text box that you would get if you hadn’t used an inventory item at all, which can be confusing if it’s your first time seeing it! This was esp. noticeable when painting the plate since there’s a lot of steps and, like—I knew which items I had to use, but not where/in which combination, etc, so there was a lot of clicking around :p

That being said: I really enjoyed this game! The art is gorgeous, the changing environment is a neat touch, and the tension was really, really well done, as was the creeping sensation that this was not going to end well at all. Def will be keeping an eye on future developments!

Hi msmori! It's great to hear you have enjoyed Winterlore.

We'll definitely consider updating the way dialogues are presented for our next episode. You're also right about the need for better interaction feedback, it's something we noticed as well while watching Let's Plays of the game.

Thank you very much for the kind words and feedback, we appreciate it.
