I literally just downloaded this, but there doesn't seem to be any clear way to enable these buttons other than shapes and painting. What am I doing wrong? Is this a bug? 

This isn't a bug, it's an unfinished piece of software.  The new version isn't out yet, and is being tested extensively over the past week or so.  Windows-only at the moment.
