A question / bugs / thoughts

Hello, loving the game so far! But I've got some things to say...

Question:

How do I download the update without losing my progress? Do I just download the new version and replace the old?

Bugs: (apologies if you're already aware of some of these)

-Whenever it's raining and I first walk outside, the rain animation only lasts for a second then stops and I can only hear it. Idk much about game development but it's as if only the rain that was initially on screen was loaded and after that it couldn't load anymore.

-The hit box for chopping trees is kinda wonky. If I'm coming at it from the side, it seems I need to be higher up on the block to actually be able to chop it. Front and back seem ok.

-Hit box for foraging plants seems pretty broken tbh, I have to kinda run around it and spam click to get it. If the item was hard and i could walk into it before collecting would feel much better (hope that makes sense)

Thoughts:

-I may just be used to Stardew, but I don't like how you have to be facing the tile you want to till / dig / plant a seed in, I think clicking an adjacent tile no matter which way you're initially facing would be much more efficient / comfortable. I don't wanna tell you how your game should work and idk how hard that would be to implement, just offering a suggestion. I do like the current system for chopping and mining however, having a hard surface to walk into before making the action without actually having to click on it feels good (i suppose having the option to click it if you wanted couldn't hurt tho).

-Being able to split stacks in chests would be a welcome addition

-I'd like to be able to fill in holes so my garden looks pretty!

-Maybe being able to zoom in on the map? It's beautiful and I'd like to see areas up close.

-This is very picky but adding a thud sfx when the tree hits the ground would be very satisfying

(now some positives so I don't sound down on the game haha)

-Love the interface, menus are very pleasing

-Music / ambiance is very soothing

-Love the catalog ordering system, it's more realistic than crafting and waiting a day for an item makes me appreciate it more.

-I like that i can retrieve all items from the bin before they're sold, unlike stardew haha

I think that's about it, I hope nothing sounded too bitchy haha I think Verdant Valley has a lot of potential and I'd love to see it grow into something great, best of luck!

Hi there, happy to hear your opinions and questions. So I’ll answer what I can here. First off in terms of patching you just download the new zip file from the website. The game patches weekly on Fridays. Once you have the new version you can just delete the old zip that you had. As for your saves there is a patching system in place that should keep your progress between patches. I will give the same warning I gave in general. The patching system is complicated and a recent addition so it isn’t completely tested, I can’t 100% guarantee your save. However thus far at least things have been stable.

As for the rain bug I’ve yet to see it myself despite trying to recreate it but I am looking into it. Others have mentioned it as well.

Hitboxes have also been talked about. It’s something I’m looking into as it is obviously very important to these kinds of games. If you haven’t already, I’d suggest turning on the guide from the settings menu. But yes, I will be seeing what I can do to make this more intuitive.

As for your thoughts on tilling and digging that system from Stardew has already been mentioned and I do plan to add it in as soon as I’m able.

Splitting stacks is also on my list to do

As far as filling in holes you should be able to. I believe when you fill in a hole with the shovel it will turn into a dirt tile however dirt tiles disappear in 2 days if you don’t plant anything on them.

Map zoom was actually mentioned recently as well. I’m not sure what form it will take but something along those lines will happen eventually.

Thud SFX for trees is a good idea, I’ll see if I can find anything for it.

Thanks for the compliments and please don’t worry about complaints. The only way the game gets better is if people tell me what they don’t like, so no worries. I wanted to also add that I’m sorry if most of this post sounds like I’m putting things off. There’s a lot of bugs and little things to figure out so some of the QoL stuff like map zoom or stack splitting tends to get waylaid but I will get to it at some point. Also, I should probably mention in case you keep playing that I’m literally uploading a patch as I write this. So, if you plan to keep playing you may want to download it, its just a small hotfix for a few of the issues from today’s patch.

Thanks for quick response! I didn't try the guide before, it helps a lot but is still not ideal. It's great to see devs so connected to the community. I understand things take a lot of time and some have priority, I just hope you take good notes lol.

a couple more thoughts if you dont mind...

-some balance tweaks, I was surprised to see grilled fish fillet, which requires cooking and many ingredients, only energize a fraction of what a radish, the cheapest and fastest crop I can grow, could fill me for. Also i feel like it rains too often, i always forget to water when it doesn't cuz i can usually rely on it haha. I am still early in the game, it's still spring so maybe i haven't gotten far enough yet. Lastly i think fish are OP profitwise atm. I understand that this could be a low priority rn as opposed to technical stuff.

-a gold count by the clock would be nice, possibly days of the week as well

-I'd love to eventually see some idle animations while fishing, he kinda looks like a statue atm haha

-what even is "S+" on food? i assumed it was like "strength" ie energy bar, but onions and lettuce each have 5 yet they fill you clearly different amounts.

-maybe unfreeze time on the oven output screen so i can count it down

-also on cooking, when a recipe is selected, show how many of that item you already have in your inventory. If you could connect stations to nearby chests that'd be pretty next level!

-last thing, have you considered any sort of survival mechanic? I'd like to have to eat to survive or suffer defects, would add some realism and challenge. You could make it optional.

Hello again, yeah I try to respond to what I can, as soon as I can. It’s just me over here so if my response is slow I’m probably just caught between other things. I do think I take good notes however lol. As usual I’ll answer what I can here.

As for the radish issue, yeah that was a bug, should have been fixed in the hotfix I posted last night (0.15.1). I didn’t realize it until someone in the discord was like “yeah radishes give you 165 stamina” and I was like “oh no no no”. But yeah that should be fixed.

Fishing is also likely OP at the moment, I believe some others have said the same thing. I do need to go back and revise the sell prices on things as well as just adjust the difficulty.

As for rain, yep the game has a weather system and it is more likely to rain in spring. Basically each day it doesn’t rain the chance of rain gets higher and in spring it grows faster. Other seasons should be more normal though.

A gold count can be done, I’ll likely need to commission some UI from my artist but otherwise should be easy.

As for days of the week, the symbol above the weather symbol on the clock is the day of the week. Those are actual astrological signs that equate to weekdays. However I just had an idea as you mentioned this. When I can get around to it I’ll probably make some sort of system where you can hover the icon and it will display the weekday in text. That way players who don’t care to memorize signs can just read it that way. I don’t mean that as an insult or anything either, I can totally understand not wanting to memorize and keep track of symbols like that.

Idle fishing animation could probably be done. My artist is currently working to get some larger projects out of the way but eventually I plan to have him go back through most things to polish stuff up.

Yeah the S+ is meant to be stamina, but like I mentioned earlier there was a bug with the system. So that number is in fact how much stamina an item should give you when eating it. The references were wrong for any item that you didn’t have to cook however. Should have been fixed in V0.15.1 if you download that.

Unfreezing time on the oven can be done, but I’ll honestly have to consider it. I think I kept it like that because all UI freezes time. If I change that for the oven it become inconsistent which could confuse people. However I suppose if they see a timer counting down they would likely piece it together. Regardless it would require a bit of code to make sure nothing strange can happen like the day ending when you are in the UI.

I have wanted to redo the recipe UI to display your inventory alongside it, the problem is making all the information fit on the screen. It is on my list of things to look at but it may be a bit though. I do agree with you if that helps however.

A survival or hardcore more is definitely an interesting idea. I hadn’t really considered it but I do like the idea. I’ll note it down for the future but I can’t promise you anything right now. Regardless it would likely have to wait until hp is a thing in the game. But making an optional mode like that sounds cool, thanks for the suggestion.
