it's a nice start game, keep going! kudos for using construct2!

I find the gameplay quite fun, but I would have liked the ability to hold the mouse click for full-auto shooting. Other than that, I think it's a great first entry!

Congrats on your start! Now, keep on going! But, while this is going to be an honest review, don't let it get you down, if anything, allow it to get you up!

What I liked:

  • It was quick and easy to understand what the goal was
  • Had a UI with goals

What I didn't like:

  • I was trying to use WSAD for a long time to move, please allow that next time (in addition to arrow keys)
  • No audio
  • It was too simple
  • The theme connection was super weak
  • Art was pretty weak, would have liked to have seen some animations, or top-down enemies/snowmen, versus side view/flying ones, since controlled character is top-down

Overall, for an 8-hour-thrown-together-at-the-last-minute-and-your-first-project submission, it was fine.

Now, learn from this, keep doing game jams every month, improve everything nice and slowly. Don't try to do an MMO in Month 3. Good luck!

I'm already working on an improved version of the game and all of your suggestions are things I was already planning on implementing. Super appreciate the feedback!

This was an amazing start for gamedev! Considering you only had 8 hours to make the game, I wouldn't complain too much about the lack of audio, but I liked the art! It's nice and simple. I really liked the effect the snowballs leave behind when you hit a snowgre, it feels like a satisfying explosion. I have a few things you can try to add in for later to improve the game, I'm not going to mention the obvious things you probably plan to add later on though (ie. main menu, audio, animations)

-If you were to add a main menu, maybe some button animations that make it feel nice and satisfying to just hover you mouse over. Things like that would make interacting with UI way nicer to do.

-WASD movement would be nice too, I'm not used to using arrow keys to move so it felt a little weird at first, especially since your right hand is on your mouse and not the hand that's using the arrow keys.

-Being able to hold down the mouse button to keep throwing snowballs would've been good too, with a good throwing SFX, it would be very satisfying to just throw a snowball.

Overall, amazing start to gamedev! I'm surprised you were ale to get this much art into the game along with the gameplay in just 8 hours, impressive!

Thanks so much for the feedback! I know you had to take off last night but I did end up playing your platformer for a bit and enjoyed it!

I agree that this was good for only 8 hours to get everything in and working! Nice job!

Thanks!

For 8 hours, this is a great start in game dev. Keep at it and you will for sure succeed! Just keep adding those little bits together and you will get there! A solid first game.

Developer

Thank you, really appreciate the feedback.

I really like the way how you approached the way how to become active in gameDev. Jumping into gameJam is a great way how to learn, finish and get feedback to your work/projects. To your game. Overall I find it as a very solid entry, given your timeframe and experience! It is obvious that there are few loose ends that would be great to patch, but this is a something that basically everyone in the game jam struggles with, so don´t worry too much about that.

The gameplay is intuitive and you know what to do right away. I can imagine that some players might preffer "full-auto" shooting instead of single shots, but it makes sence to have single shots, given the theme (you are a snowman) :).

Another thing would be that I have noticed that your strenght is growing, but the "snow-bullets" do still the same damage. I can see that your intention could be that the snowman is actually getting stronger - not the shots - and once strong enough, the bad guys will stop appearing. But since you have a game with core mechanic of shooting, player could expect that stronger means, that with bigger power, you´ll be able to get rid off the enemies faster. Also this mechanic could potentionaly help you build up the difficulty with the time.

At the very end it seems that the displayed message is incomplete?

And of course some music and sound effect would do a great deal to the atmosphere, and if there should be just one advice from me: next time, no matter the time frame think of the music or some basic sfx. I was the same way in my beginings, the most important was to finish some art and some code = sounds not so much important. But then I saw how much even basic sounds and music can do with such a small entries!

Don´t get me wrong, you did awesome job! You created and finished a game project from scratch! And that is a great achievement!! Really great job done and I will love to see how will your journey continue ;)

Thanks so much for the feedback, I really appreciate it. I'm going to be re-iterating on the idea and releasing an improved version of the game in a few weeks. Some things I'm going to be adding: better looking sprites and tilemap with some basic animations, music and sound effects, WASD movement, a UI for a title screen and win/lose screen, and a mechanic to make the player sprite larger and your snowballs do more damage as you gain more snow strength, and a mechanic that increases the monster's speed and spawn rate as you kill more monsters.

ok first of all loved the idea~

it's basically the same as our game only this time the player gets stronger instead of the enemy xD

the art is great and the game is quite fun ! good job on doing all of that in a week :>

i'm not sure if that's already in game.. but when you get stronger by merging with the other snowman does your attack do more damage? it doesn't feel like it does and that's a shame, I was waiting for the opportunity to blast those damn snowgres in one shot! xD

Thanks for the feedback! I actually just found out about this game jam yesterday morning and made the game in about 6-8 hours with zero prior game dev experience so I was learning how to use a game engine for the first time in the process. I plan on re-iterating on the idea and improving the game over the next couple of weeks. I want to add more mechanics with the snow strength - either making the snowballs do more damage or making the player sprite get bigger as your snow strength grows.

oh wow! you should be proud of yourself! that's a great accomplishment for one day! o-o can't wait to see what you can do with more time on your hands xD

Thank you! I actually created the game in about 6 hours, with zero prior game development experience so I had to learn Construct 3 while making it. I basically just started learning game dev yesterday and joined a game jam my first day. I'm going to keep re-iterating on the idea and improving the game for the next couple of weeks and switching to WASD controls is one of the first things I want to change. Once you reach 10 snow strength you beat the game. But I plan on adding in some additional mechanics like possibly doing more damage or increasing the size of the player sprite as your snow strength grows. I really appreciate the feedback!
