just so you hustlers are all aware, quality ratings are definitely better than a high number of ratings. You need to get 20 to rank (I think) and if you look at the last jams, the winners have had like 23 ratings etc. FYI.
yeah! and how do we know how much some one has rated our game?
Yeah, you are right we only need 20rates to join in the ranks, but having a lot of rate will help you too since many people share different thought about your game, and it will help you how to improve your game, and its not about winning too, its about participation, experience and fun! because its game jam after all, Cheers!
yes there is a lot of "that was fun good job" comments which arent really always honest, if we're being honest with ourselves, because we know there is stuff wrong with out games. I think that if you just try to amass ratings, you are going to start deviating towards the median (like 3 star) and your rank will decrease, unless you have produced something totally amazing. better to get +-20 genuine ratings from people and see where you land. Definitely picked up a few contacts this jam that I hope to see again in the next jam.
First of all what is winning? This is 1600ish amateur(semi-pro at most) game development enthusiasts rating each other's games. It has no weight at the end in my opinion.
Secondly, I'm hundred percent with LightPotato and PixiVan about the comments. I would prefer a quarter of the ratings as genuine comments. For example, my team is serious about game development and we are trying to get into the industry. I knew nothing about game development, coding or unity until 8-9 months ago. But I have been working hard to learn. The first game we built 6 months ago has been played 127 times and nobody wrote anything about the game. This is a bit frustrating. For our jam entry around 60 people wrote and around 15 of that is genuine thoughts of the comment giver. This is gold. This is the type that we take into consideration. This is going to be the stuff that we take to shape our future plans.
And the third is that I've played 80 games for this jam and half of that is so amateur that the genuine comment should be ''congrats on completing'' yet I'm trying to write a bit more than that so that these amateur developers would get a bit more motivation to continue. When my game receives a ''Good Job'' comment I automatically think that they either didn't play or they didn't like it. But this is also fine. Cause at the end, I think, we are all searching for that genuine % 20 which will fill our motivation gauge a little bit more.
So on the end note, I want more people to play the game I made and let me know their feelings about the game. If there are people who would play the game with a little ''Play my game first'' condition, I find that it is not that bad of a deal.
Cheers to all...=)
I like your take on it and I agree with your thinking. I do wonder if someone is dropping by your game and rating it, as you say for example, "good job" - how much time did they actually spend looking at it and thinking about it? Because ultimately that turns into a rating. And it's probably going to be somewhere around 3 for everything because they are not invested in it. For me I want to look at all those categories at the end of the day, and relative to everyone else, be able to gage more or less how well I'm doing, and thats difficult to do if I got 15 "good job" ratings with a 3 star average (and everyone else did too), instead of 15 serious ratings with 1/2 star for my weak areas, 4/5 star for my strong areas. It helps you figure out where you can focus on improving, in addition to the areas where you have strength and can focus more on in your next game.
Please review my game, I really appreciate your vote and comment
