Game Title
Purging Blade

Developer Name
Green Future Games

Short Promo Blurb
You are Bristle, a B-Green unit created to take back the surface from the Smog that has taken over. You and your friends must find a way to fix all this, but is it too late for that?

Full Description
Made by a team of novice game devs in just over a month, we are planning on continuing development unhindered by the time limit. We are proud to present to you our vision of a potential future for our planet, should we not take the appropriate steps to fix it. We hope that, besides having fun, the player takes away the inspiration to take steps to save our one and only planet, lest the curse of the Smog become reality!

Created for IndieCade's 2024 Climate Jam! Check out the other projects created by our peers here: https://itch.io/jam/climate-jam-2024

Artistic Statement / Use of Theme(s)
We are proud to present to you Purging Blade, Green Future Games’ submission to Indiecade’s 2024 Climate Jam. What we wanted to create was a game that was A) Fun enough to gain the player’s attention, and B) Had them coming away from the experience motivated to make a change in their real life to benefit society. Purging Blade is about Bristle, the last B-Green unit, fighting back against the Smog that has taken over the surface. In reality, the Smog has been created by humans, and when Bristle realizes this he comes to the understanding that perhaps his creators aren’t as perfect as he initially thought they were. He refuses to repeat their mistakes, and with the help of his new allies, he is able to find a new, more sustainable and realistic way of creating a new green Earth.

We decided to create a game that tried to resonate with the player emotionally instead of factually. A lot of studies and statistics exist in the world, but they won’t cause the average person to make a change unless they are convinced from an emotional level that it’s their responsibility to act.

Development Summary
We are extremely proud of the work that we have completed thus far, and are hoping to continue development after the Jam. Our general process involved a weekly meeting for discussions, planning, and delegation, followed by daily asynchronous conversation in our dedicated Discord server. We would follow up on individual team member’s work. Important cuts were made from the original vision for the sake of scope control, but it has become apparent that our scope was too broad for the time allotted for the Climate Jam. We had some major issues, including a few unexpected disasters, including a ton of different elements breaking right before our Production submission. We spent the morning of the submission doing our best to fix it all, but still ended up with a weaker-than-expected Production phase build. However, we’ve spent the last week fixing those errors and preparing for the post-Jam work that we hope to release on Steam.

Release Plan
We definitely plan on continuing development with as much as the team is able! We had a very ambitious idea that, while it was not fully realized during the Jam, we think can be accomplished within the next several months. We plan to release this on Steam as well as Itch.io, as we believe Steam does an excellent job exposing users to new games by smaller developers. We will be both attempting to accomplish our original vision and take into consideration the advice we received from the Jam mentors, and potentially expanding our scope a bit. We have a super talented team and hope you will look forward to the full release of Purging Blade!

I like the art and vibes of the game, but like others, I found myself getting stuck pretty early on due to the inconsistent collisions and small hitbox of the players attacks.

Was there any Nier:Automata influence here? :) The character's silhouette and design are pretty nice, and I quite enjoyed the music too. It seems it's possible to get past the opening dialogue and move to the right by attacking/right clicking to have the character move a bit more to the right and go past the detection zone. I wasn't able to go too far though -- there were lots of lagging when attacking enemies and jumping, so the PC died. It's still an intriguing idea, congrats for going that far and I hope you'll be able to work more on it in the next months!
