Hi I was part of the Feedback Quest. The VOD of me playing this game is up if you're interested.
My biggest issue with the game is the text dump. If the text is being voice, I think it would benefit to either reduce the words or have an option to just hear it or just soemthing wehre I don't feel like I'm reading an entire essay.
I can feel the old school classic FPS inspiration this game is inspired by, but it lacks the intensity of the medium it took inspiration from. The lack of feedback when being shot, outside of just a mud filled screen kinda makes it hard to enjoy the game. The Balance of the game feels off, and the bullets timing is off too. Still a good game with lots of potential. I like what I saw, with some work, I can see the potential for success here.
Hello! I was one of the streamers who took part in Feedback Quest, and I'm here to leave some comments I had while playing.
I need to preface this with an apology. I may come off as an asshole in my comments. I don't intend to, but there are things about this game that legitimately pissed me off. I'm going to focus on the gameplay first before I get into that part, though.
This game made me think of Doom with its graphics. However, I didn't feel like it was as fun to play as Doom. Enemies often took way more shots to kill than it made sense to take (especially considering you're using a futuristic weapon) and there were times I couldn't find where to go because the structure of buildings hid pathways unless I looked at the right angle. If the game featured more weapons, it would potentially be more interesting.
Now to get into the meat. So this event is an international event. It has people from many parts of the world in it, and among those people are going to be differences in opinions on stuff. Because of this, a game that features real world political elements is generally not a good idea to submit as it can create flaring tensions with people who are against those political elements.
From here, I'm going to cut the crap and just state things clearly. As someone who lives in the West, I do not appreciate a pro-Russia & anti-West game. This isn't to say I'm anti-communist and pro-capitalist, because I'm not. I'm a believer in both systems and think that a combined system where the state controls common use things (like electricity, water, housing, internet, etc) while things that can have more variation and aren't necessities for modern day life would be made in the private sector under strong regulation. My issue is the fact that this is pro-Russia at a time when Russia is waging war against another nation that wanted to connect itself more to the western world. The tone of the game comes off as insulting to me as someone who lives in the western world. I could not in good conscious play this game beyond a certain point, nor can I give it a fair rating. I am biased and I acknowledge that.
This is nothing against you as a person, dev. This is just my opinion of the story of this game and what it pushes. I do see you have made other games, and in the future I would recommend avoiding putting a game with a blatant real world political message built into it.
Thanks for your opinion.
Perfect game
thank you very much! I liked your game as well.
Hi. Voice action is "expensive" but a thing that can really improve the experience! The overall experience is quite hard to my eyes. the camera moves super fast (for me). It reminds me of the Wolf3d... oh, those times back then!
I loved that everything is voiced, it makes the world seem more real.
It took me quite a while to figure out how to enter the portal, maybe make it easier to pick up the teleporter thing from the body?
The graphics/art style was interesting.. the soldiers were 2D that fell flat once they died.
It wasn't easy to dodge the bullets, sometimes the corridors were too narrow, so I ended up dying pretty quickly.
Okay, I managed to jump over the first hole. Since I don't have a PC, I played in the web mode (Firefox). There were some major bugs:
- After an interaction (reading a text, e.g.), everything started spinning until I regained control of the mouse by pressing ESC. Same happened after every mouse click.
– When facing with my back to a note and pressing E it was still read out.
– Changing the view direction with the mouse was limited to the size of the window and that only accounted for maybe 90 degrees rotation. I could use arrow keys to achieve this, fortunately.
There were a few other points I have noticed until I died a gruesome death – twice:
1. At first, it was very unclear to me what the floating things in the lab are. Wormholes? Aliens? I tried to interact with them by clicking on them or pressing E. Ultimately, something worked, but I still don't know what, and I tunneled back to 1917 (I guess?). But then again: if so, where are the Nazis? And whom do I shoot there? Liberals? Anyway. They are evil. I guess.
2. It would be helpful to add some short tutorial that at least explains the main keys. Maybe I'm dumb, but shooting with the control key was not the first thing I tried.
3. The guards' AI is weird: You can kill their comrade: no reaction. You can shoot to their left and right: no reaction. You can jump on top of them: no reaction. Only when you hit them, they start shooting at you.
4. I was lost to what I was supposed to do in the past. Shooting the evil guys, okay, but what else? Maybe some kind of mission statement would be helpful.
On the positive side, I think the overall story idea of having to go back to the past to repair it and somehow secure the future is nice. (Kind of like "Back to the Future".) I still haven't quite understood the story yet, but that's probably okay, as the player will uncover that later on. I think SU-notalgia enthusiasts will also like the premise of the game. Graphic and sound have strong nostalgia vibes too.
The political aspects – well, it looks like we won't agree on that. Most players might not care at all for whom and why they are fighting as long as the game is fun, so that's probably a minor point for that. I know people who would be personally hurt by the way the game presents history or by its SU-nostalgia, given that such nostalgia has been abused for many bad things recently, but one might argue that we shouldn't care about politics here and that these players can simply play something else, so I don't want to press these points further.
I hope this feedback was helpful for you.
Did you try clicking on the game screen to lock you mouse in place? Or did you full screen it? Or did you try downloading the game to see what more it has to offer?
As I wrote in my second sentence of my comment: I didn't download the game, because I do not have a PC.
In the web version, I first tried full screen, but that didn't seem to work well, so I turned it off again. I clocked on the screen, but that led to wild spinning of the view.
I believe that could be due to you having an unsupported controller connected to your computer if that is so try disconnecting it.
No, nothing connected to my Mac, not even a mouse. I just used the built-in trackpad.
Ah I see, well there's your problem haha. I highly recommend using a mouse when playing games on a computer otherwise you will always have a bad experience with 3 dimensional games.
Also I would love to comprehend how you made a game without a pc, that sounds like an interesting story!
Not so interesting: Just a very normal Mac as many devs use it. Just that I don't have an additional PC to play games.
Ah I see, I was confused because in my mind PC stands for Personal Computer. A mac and any other PC running any other operating system is a personal computer to me. I thought you were saying I am using someone else's, or a library, or a schools PC.
Game kept moving where i was looking when I tried to play so i couldn't do much, Interesting game though. not really fun with that bug but nice stuff so far from what I got
I would suggest you download it, or put the game in Fullscreen that seems to resolve the issue you speak of.
If you have a controller plugged into your pc or have one blue toothed to your pc I would recommend trying to disconnect it. That may solve the problem you were having.
This game is fantastic, from the story to the actual gameplay, and I like the game editor too. I don't have a chance to play multiplayer because I don't have anyone available to play with, but I'm sure it's as good as the single-player mode. Keep up the excellent work!
Thank you very much! If you have a steam account and other people are playing they will show up in the server browser by default.
Specifically rating the multiplayer. Honestly simple in the best way and just plain fun! it reminds me of the old halo 2 days where you could just hop into a match and chill with some friends and not take games as serious as your job. I can see many hours of entertainment camping in corners with a shotgun and sniping my friends as they turn a corner and just whole heartedly laughing the whole time. The option to make my own maps is what really will evolve the possibilities of play time and i cant wait to delve deeper into that rabbit hole! overall i would rate it a 8/10 (just multiplayer rating im not eduamakted enough to get into politics or the history the story indicates or resembles) im interested to see the future of multiplayer!
I was wondering whether this is an elaborated parody and dipped into the game, but it looks like the devs really meant what they wrote. OMG. The victims of communist rule will turn in their graves, but anyway, just one more game that glorifies some terrible human history. Been there, seen it.
If I'm wrong and the game is meant differently, please correct me...
Bro you obviously didn't dip deep enough because in this game you are literally killing Nazis! And just so you know in World War Two the communists and the USA were on the same side! have a great day.
Okay, I looked into the game once more, whether I was right or wrong, but there it starts with "at the end of the 20th century"... – Wasn't WW II from 1939–1945? We are all thankful to the US and the SU to have defeated the Nazis at that time, but it is certainly not the war this game is about.
"it is certainly not the war this game is about"- yes it is, because this game is about you time traveling back to the Soviet Union! Protecting key parts of history so that they can help defeat the Nazis in ww2. You should really, download and play the whole game. I hope you have a great day!
Well, then I apologize. I didn't make it far in the game, because I got stuck in the first hole and couldn't get out... I'm probably a bit too sensitive in the current situation where a country is invading another one to clear it from "Nazis". – But you know, you could have just pointed out my mistake immediately instead of leaving strange comments on my game's page...
Well I'm sorry for "leaving strange comments on your game's page"!
No problem, and thanks for taking it down.
The victims of capitalist rule turned in their graves from this comment. Sucks that you glorify a terrible time in human history.
I'm sorry if there was a misunderstanding. So let me clarify: I do not glorify capitalism. I just think that a naive glorification of communist rule in the SU is not appropriate.
If you spent time making a piece of art to share your understanding of capitalism and communism or politics in a whole I would love to try it! Saying that this game is glorifying anything is you projecting that onto it. On top of that saying it's a naive glorification would mean that the developer didn't know what they are talking about, which I would like to assume they do. I feel as though you have been succumb to a plethora of propaganda and fearmongering to have such a negative reaction to a game that you immediately, in a reactive nature, respond with a "Weird comment" about the least developed part of the game. Not even leaving any constructive criticism initially, just reacting to the setting of the game not the game itself. If you download the full version there is a multiplayer that works with steam servers so you don't have to port forward, and a level editor that allows for you to make a map to play with friends. You don't even have to send the map file to your friends it just syncs when they join! The developer even said they wanted people to test that part of the game specifically.
Thank you for your opinion.
I am specifically looking for feedback on the multiplayer and level editor portion of the game, Which do not work in the web browser. You can download the game and make sure you have steam running and you should be able to automatically connect to anyone hosting a server!
