How does your game fit the theme?
Your party members are out of your control - In addition, instakill weak spots mean you are likely to lose control of the situation quickly - though you can be resurrected, it's a costly process.

Interesting concept, I tried a few runs. But like others, I never felt like I had the game figured out..

I really liked the concept, the graphics and the dialogues!

The main problem I had was with the menu interaction. At first it wasn't clear to me what actions could be selected (black) and which couldn't (grey) and I think it was because Interact was always allowed, even though there wasn't any feedback on what it was doing (which turned out to be nothing, most of the time). Before I understood this, I couldn't make sense of any of the game.

Hope this helps!

Lol my interface sucks. I have a ways to go!

Loved the visuals and dialogue! Although, the battles were pretty difficult to grasp and i never really felt like i knew how to play. Seems like a sweet game here, I just wish the controls were more intuitive!

Developer

I tried to make the traditional RPG menu quicker to navigate, but as it was implemented that was a huge mistake! Don't try to fix things that aren't broken during a game jam, lol.

Genius idea to let the weapons talk like that. Also liked the music :) Good entry

Developer

Glad you liked the music, seeing as I have never made music before!

This is a super creative idea and really ambitious for a game jam. I would love to see this in a full game form with fleshed out characters and a cool storyline. Really well done!

Developer

It ended up being a way bigger project than I had anticipated! It's only a fraction of what I had planned, so maybe you'll get to see that full game sometime in the next 20 years :P

Really cool concept, I just wish the controls were a little more clear/intuitive. Might also help if it were turn-based so that the player can have time to navigate the different menu options.

I originally wanted the AI to be able to perform more complex behaviors, including leaving and returning to battles. Since stuff was supposed to happen concurrently inside and outside of battles, I wanted to make sure time was always passing - hence the attack timers. The bigger problem is the lack of a tutorial and the fact that the lack of animations makes it really unclear what's happening in battles!

The main issue with the game is the controls. This could have easily been fixed if you used the keys 1,2,3, and 4 instead of z,x,c, and v; and by placing each key under each command.

Also your party members seem pretty in-control. They follow you around and attack just like most party members do in games. It would have been more interesting if they went their own separate ways, didn't listen to you, and you instead had to protect them. Good idea, could have had better execution, and shows potential.

Developer

I had a tonne more stuff planned for the AI, but just getting the systems in place took upwards of 24 hours, so the AI ended up being really barebones ;-;

I like the minimalist aesthetic, the way the palette changes is cool. I like the concept of requesting the AI do certain things.

It was a bit hard to understand what was going on in the battles. The AI ended up doing most of the work for me randomly. It seemed like when they leveled up their timers got faster but mine stayed the same which meant I didn't really get to do much. Probably playing it wrong :p

I didn't have time to add attack animations, and it turns out animations are crucial to making RPG battles clear and easy to understand... Whoops!

Nice game! I really enjoyed the art and gameplay. Well done!

Pixel art has always been my go-to for jams since it's so fast to put together. 16x16 1-bit icons are quick to fine-tune!

I liked the theme and the talk between the characters! I did get a little confused with the controls though, I was trying to select the action with the corresponding letter (for example for the first button I would try to press z) but I'm not sure if I was doing it correct. Do I not have any control over my character in battle either (I know allies do their own things)?

Developer

Sorry it wasn't more clear! During battle, your arrow keys select which target your action will have, and ZXCV navigate the menu. You can only attack after the timer next to your character reaches 100 - before that, any battle actions will be disabled. You can tell if an action took by looking at the Battle Log, as well as the menu selection sound.
