Funny idea! I loved the music, and the pixel effect you have here! I would be nice to add some juice like blood for when you hit a frog and trail markings from your wheels, etc. Great game!

Also could you rate my game? I would really appreciate it, thanks!

AAGHHHH THE CONTROLS

Developer

ok

I couldn't imagine people would get so frustrated over them

Pretty cool game! Unfortunately, I found it rather unplayably difficult to control the car. I think the main problem for me was the camera's perspective, which I would normally expect to be away from rather than towards the user; that impacted my control coordination pretty heavily. I might also suggest allowing the car to be turned without applying gas or reversing so that those controls feel more uniformly responsive to the player. In any case, good execution and clever concept! Hopefully I can wipe away the guilt on my conscience after running over a couple frogs.

Thanks! I didn't quite get what you mean with the camera perspective — that you think it should be pointing at the frog house rather than the tunnel at the end?

As for the other things, I agree. It's a combination of lack of playtesting and developer's bias. (Always the same stuff tripping me up...)

I meant that steering the car forwards makes it go downwards towards the camera, whereas normally I’d expect it to go upwards away from the camera (so that the camera kind of follows behind the car). I don’t think you would need to change where the camera points, just where the car moves relative to it depending on player inputs.

Anyway, yeah, happens to the best of us — great work nonetheless!!

I love the shader used on this, the pixellation makes it looks so cool. I was confused at first why I couldn't control the vehicle, but then I realized this uses absolute style controls rather than the tank controls that I'd expect to use in a vehicle (which I guess arguably makes it easier to control because you don't have to think about orientation, just I wasn't expecting that.)

Developer

Yeah, it was probably a bad idea to only now actually playtest the game with keyboard controls... I see what you mean, and I agree.

I see a lot of people complaining about the controls, I didn't like the myself either sadly.

If I had to guess why, I’d say it's because most driving games don't control at all like this, left and right usually just turn the car counterclockwise and clockwise (respectively), no matter the orientation of the car relative to the camera.

I guess because of this, going against what everyone is accustomed to just makes the controls harder to get used to, making people dislike them.

If I were you, I’d just go for a traditional driving game control scheme, I don't see how controls like the ones you made add anything to the gameplay, in fact, I think they take away from the game feel.

Keep in mind I’m not at all an expert and this is just what I think, I’m only saying this because I saw you wanted feedback on the other comments.

Developer

Huh. After replaying it with keyboard controls, I see what you mean. It was just a case of lack of playtesting (who would've guessed?) that I didn't actually test with keyboard at all.

This will be useful to know for next time, thank you.

The controls are bad.

Why? How would you improve them?

Fun concept! A little awkward to control but I liked it! I appreciate the audio levels too. Nice touch.

Developer

What exactly did you not like about the controls? I would like to know how to improve them.

I hate froge
