First off, excellent tutorial. Not only was it step-by-step for the player, but you even had isolated spaces where the player could perform each action. Brilliant!

I enjoyed the music but wasn't sure if it fit or not, personally. The gameplay was fun and rather challenging. I didn't see much use for the grapple other than getting from one end of the map to the other. Also, very nicely done mini-map. Kudos for that. I will agree with what Inglo said about there's really no incentive to move beyond one patch of the map. You can bunker down and sacrifice all others, really, at no cost to yourself. Maybe if each patch spawned 1 type of plant or some sort of variability? Dunno.

All in all, a good game here!

This game was a lot of fun to play!  The art is well done and the sounds really fit the haunting atmosphere.  The farming mechanic feels balanced with the shooting, neither feels like it's the "main" aspect of the game.

The moving and shooting were very fluid and I loved the shotgun's kickback -- not enough games highlight how powerful those things are!  The hook mechanic was a little hit-or-miss for me though.  Only being able to hook onto objects made it very limiting, and when I could utilize it, it did it didn't seem to get me anywhere *that* much faster.  A "sprint" feature would have worked better, but then I guess you wouldn't have the "chain" thing.

One other minor issue I had was that there didn't seem to be any real reason to protect more than one patch.  Just hanging around one corner (or even one side) made the game much easier with no real penalty.

Despite these minor gripes, this was one of the games I spent the most time with and it was a blast to play.  Well done!

Developer

Thanks @Inglo Games. Glad you felt like balance was there. And I loved that you noticed the shotgun kickback.

Great feedback on not going that much faster with the chain. Yeah, we wanted to stay on theme. And we were all obsessed with making a hook mechanic :).

For the issue with protecting one patch - We definitely need to implement more incentive to visit multiple areas.

The way those aliens speed up when you approach is scary! I scrambled to shoot the first one :D The growing part seems underused right now, crops could give some kind of bonus, heal or something. Did you have other ideas you didn't have time to implement?  As others wrote, using the hook is limited by the view. Once you know the map you can roughly aim in the right direction, but it is dangerous when aliens are around! Nice entry overall, it feels like a complete package.

Developer

I'm really happy you noticed the alien speed up, it was such a last minute feature. But it ended up being great.

Absolutely, one of our devs @imgoinghamm wanted to implement very simple buffs when taking care of crops: reduced reload times, faster movement speed, hp bonus etc.

That hook + camera change would be awesome. It seems to be a consensus that it might make the game feel better. I think we'll try it!

Overall : The idea is great, I love the kind of silly vibe: farming, aliens, and a grappling hook, just had a sort of tongue in cheek feel that it didn't take itself too seriously which made it just feel more relaxed and fun. The grappling hook is smoooth, very nice. The gun could use some additional fx/work but it pushing you back is a great detail, makes it feel stronk. Also the minimap is essential for this kind of game where you are defending a large area with multiple points of interest, if you didn't have that it would be frustrating. Getting that feature in was super important so great work with that.

The aliens lunging at you when you get close is cool, they remained kinda scary even after I knew how to time my shots. I think with the way the shotgun behaves it makes it sort of a timing game if you kill one without getting hit, which is good. I'm pretty sure the only reason it can be annoying is the camera - when the player is walking in a direction, the camera smooth makes it so you know less about what you're walking into than what's behind you. I think Natedog's idea about using the mouse to look around might be worth trying out. On the subject of aliens, some green blood could make them funner to shoot, or if you wanted to keep it cutesy you could give them a little jitter and knockback when shot, before they die.

The main issue though is there isn't really anything to work towards, which is probably due to jam time constraints of course. But I'm gonna make some suggestions anyway because this game gives me ideas lol

You should probably require crops to progress in the game/survive, in some fashion or another since they aren't useful now. My personal idea is that the game could be divided into months, each month is like a "round" in the game. The round of gameplay has a time limit, and each month you eat X amount of food. When winter rolls around, maybe you can't grow crops for 3 rounds and this is sort of the big scary thing you need to hoard extra crops for. I think this would be great coupled with the ability to trade/sell food for upgrades. This would require the player to gamble on themselves. "Can I really afford to upgrade my grappling hook? It will make getting around easier but I'll have less of a safety net for the next winter".  So Spring would feel kinda safe and lighthearted, la dee da I survived the winter and I have 9 months till next winter, I can buy cool shit at the store I ain't scared" and then fall rolls around and you're like "ohmygod I need more food I'm gonna die this winter why did I buy that cool hat"

There are a million ways you could do it though, that was just my armchair game design thoughts. This game was funny and unique, I gave 3 or 4 stars in my rating. Great work!

Developer

Thanks for awesome response Griddolini.

+1 to updating mouse mechanics.

You should probably require crops to progress in the game/survive, in some fashion or another since they aren't useful now.

I think this would be a fantastic change. And the explanation you gave was great. Also, if we did a time-based constraint on the game with rounds, it might make the player feel like they're actually progressing. The only "progression" we have is score and slowly increasing amount of aliens.

Very fun game I really liked the feel while playing it. The only things I can suggest are to have the mouse influence the camera position, I feel that it would give it a smoother feel as well as allow you to see the aliens easier and maybe change up how the alien behaves. Just little things i'm picking at, overall a very well made game!

Developer

Thanks natedog2424!

You’re thinking maybe it’d Be smoother if the camera followed the mouse instead of the player? Good suggestion on different alien behaviors, definitely on the backlog!

Submitted

Not entirely, just offset the camera from the player towards the mouse. You could also base it upon what direction the character moving. I feel like this would give the game a good feel but who knows.

Hey, Nice little game you got there. I'm going to explain my vote and what I think you guys could make to make it better.

Theme: 5. The game goes nice with the themes. ( You guys used the 3 themes as well).

Fun: 4. I give a four because I really liked the gameplay loop and I'm really into these type of arcade games, but I could be better of course. One of the main things is that there's no use for the crops except from the score, you could just run around killing the aliens if you don't care about that. I think maybe the crops could be the ones to give the bullets or regen the life (just a suggestion). What I realized is that after a few plays I did'nt few soo compeled to play it again, but the first times was just fine.

Controls: 4. They serve the purpose, I like the hook and the shotgun, but overall nothing super fancy.

Graphics: 3. They serve the purpose, but they could soo be much better. One of the main things is actually understanding the most important things and giving it contrast. The farm floor was the same bright as the character and the crops, you guys should try to push the visuals of what matters to the player; make the aliens bigger and the background not as distracting.

Audio: 3. Good. but I'm not that good on audio stuff to give proper feedback on this.

Originality: 4. A good game, that fits the theme propperly, you made a good job with what you got, and is actually original in it's simplicity.

Overall is a good game, I think with a little more work on could be a fun replayable game.

@Tunadel

This is such great feedback, thank you! I agree on the "no use for the crops except the score" part. We want the crop collecting to provide the character temporary buffs, but we just had no time to do it. I like your suggestion about regen'ing life.

you guys should try to push the visuals of what matters to the player; make the aliens bigger and the background not as distracting.

And this suggestion is something that I think would make the game so much better. Thanks again!

Nice game you have here! That hook is so smooth! Looking forward to have more upgrades to this.!

Developer

@lpancho

Thank you for the comment! Urodela and DrGrognak worked very hard on the hook :)

Fun, but difficult little game.
I really liked the minimap. How did you implement that?
The art was a bit blurry for me. How did you import it? With or without filter?
The credits did not work for me and was just displaying a black screen.

Developer

Thanks @vanne! Glad you liked it.

To make the minimap, we just drew basic shapes based on the positions of objects within the tile map.

I don’t think we did anything specific to the images. We just let Godot handle the importing.

I’ll be sure to check the credits page is working then.

Hi Vanne! You can see the minimap code here too: https://github.com/dalisaydavid/bumpkin-berserker/blob/03aa48bc3f29a9eae86971db6...
