Very impressive game, I did a paper/presentation in college on the ant/pheromone pathfinding algorithm, was not expecting it to pop up in a game jam :D

You did an amazing job with the tutorial and adding some really well thought out mechanics to build on the simulation.

Awesome game, were you working by yourself or with a team?

Developer

Hey, thanks for your kind comment! Yeah I got myself inspired from a Sebastian Lague video where he does a very similar thing.

I also wanted to try out doing some simulation on the GPU using a "feedback" shader (turned out to be pretty tricky to set up in Godot, but worked out well in the end). The pheromone diffusion is done that way to keep things fast.

I did the coding, background art and the music myself. I got help for the ant and enemy sprites and the SFX.

Ah, I figured the Sebastian Lague video was part of the inspiration. that video was one of my favorites of his.

And I was wondering if you used a shader, the game seemed pretty performant with a lot going on on screen.

Anyway, nice job! One of my favorites in the jam so far :)

Spoilers ahead!

Good old ant simulation, it was the least thing i expected to see in this jam! not only you managed to nicely implement it, you also appended it with the warrior ant, and by adding  the pheromone brush, you turned it into strategic game. genius!

there are a few frustrating moments there, like ants with and without food would form loops, that are hard to break,  sometimes ants would not listen to pheromones and just proceed to die at the altar or in lava, right when you need them most.

Thanks for the comment, glad you liked it!

The loops are a bit frustrating, I had a hard time balancing the ant AI to work well in both low and high ant numbers. I also had to make them a bit dumber because I was running into performance problems. But I'm sure it can still be improved given some time :)

The last lava bit was done in like the last hour of the jam, I didn't even have time to properly test it, from the feedback I gather it's too hard :P

Damn ! This i a really really cool game ! The ant simulation is splendid ! I'm simply amazed !

Too bad I got blocked just before the end ? I couldn't sacrifice all the 100 ants the remaining one did not want to follow the pheromones and I eventually ran out of food :(

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah I think the game is quite hard currently, we didn't have time to balance it at the end. But it is beatable :)

This game is a really cool simulation and surprisingly i kept playing it for a whole lesson during school lol, i was kept being wowed by the fact that it only took about a week to create such a cool game!
