Oh man, Neolithic games are my jam! This is a cool take, focusing specifically in on hunting big dangerous monsters to feed your people!
You mention finding artifacts in the opening text but the only other reference I see to them is for healing, which is fine, this is light enough for me to run with!
I really like the change from 2d6 to d10, the swingy nature makes everything feel a bit more visceral and dangerous which is a good effect for this game, I think - and I like the introduction of opposed rolls for combat combined with the HP changes.
This feels like it would lend itself really well to open tables and troupe play, plus I feel like you could bolt in a whole alternate procedure of play for the month-long downtime!
Thanks for putting this together! I love the art and the overall feel!
I love any game with mechanics around village/town-building, and using the idea of collecting food for the village to level up the characters ties together a bunch of mechanics and goals the characters may otherwise not have.
Me too! Someone mentioned on Reddit that a good addition to this would be a zine style compendium with additional rules and I gotta say I agree! Adding more village mechanics is at the top of the list for me!
Strong second on additional rules and village stuff!
Thanks for making this one! There aren't enough caveman games around. :) Very cool. Now I can pay Ringo Starr - er I mean Atouk - trying to convince Lana I am the best choice in the year One Zillion BC – October 9th.
I agree, I only know of a few cavemen centered games, one of them being just an expansion for GURPS!
This is rad. You've packed a lot into a single page with a nice, engaging layout. Love your choice of stats and the way advancement is tied to securing a month's worth of food. Also interesting to see that you did away with the bell curve for a more swingy feel that mirrors the unpredictability of caveman life.
One small, silly complaint: The anachronistic reference to a football. Surely there's something appropriately stone age you could have chosen?
I’m glad you enjoy it! I tried to keep it simple like Tunnel Goons yet bring some interesting ideas to it.
As for the anachronism, you’re completely right and I’m surprised I didn’t notice how out of place that feels! I’ll have to edit that and re-upload the document!
If you have any questions or comments about Stone Age Goons I'd love to hear them!
