I was one of the official judges this year, and now that the results have been made public, and I'm free to do so, here is my score and thoughts on this title:
Overall score: 8
Not bad. I feel I've missed something with how this is a prequel to an existing in-development game I've never heard of, and some of the story beats were a bit sappy and long-winded, but I still enjoyed it. I felt the combat was more unique than most, but a bit too simplistic to have any real depth of strategy. I found myself only really juggling abilities as I waited for more energy or cooldowns. It was also a bit tedious and felt like padding with the frequent mandatory battles that gave zero reward. The puzzle and flashbacks were a nice touch, however. All in all, I enjoyed it, and I'm sad I wasn't able to finish in the hour as the story suddenly took a twist that really intrigued me.
The game overall was excellent. Story-wise, very well delivered. You could clearly understand how things will go from beginning to end. Also maybe because of the music choices , brilliant! It lets the players know what emotions to feel in specific scenes such as the part at the end where Laksen had to punish the villagers. Very engaging. Graphics...to be honest, I'm not a fan but after seeing this, it's kind of refreshing and thought it was pretty. Well, the ones I saw before were from the oldest designs, LOL.
Battle... very easy, I find. At first I thought, I might lose given that it's difficult to not use a skill in a round. However, I found a way to strategically use their skills to my benefit so I had an adventurous time in just an hour of playing. The puzzles were very easy too, it does not require a lot of thinking which could sometimes be stressful (speaking from experience, LOL). And I had to go through a lot of monsters (since they're in every corner of the ruined village), I felt exhausted at the thought but the way the battle system was designed, it will let you think otherwise.
I would really like to see more of this game especially the main one that you've been mentioning in the comments. I bet it's as awesome as this.
Great work! Keep it up!
Hello, thank you so much for trying out the game.
Wow, your feedback is very well appreciated. I see you got the intention/meaning begind the last scene, yey!
Also glad you liked the battle system that much. Tbh, I really need the feedback from it since the same battle system will be used in the future Lakserf game.
Again, thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the game. :D
Awesome battle systems, awesome characters and battlers , beautiful graphics and game feels soo refreshing, Love the plot twisted ending after the credits! Would love to see more of the story and the out come of Laksens destiny.
Thank you so much, d757! This really means a lot to me. <3
More power to your ever growing channels. :D
I really like the music choices and think the tutorial cards are quite lovely. But, I do think maybe there's too much all at once being given to the player. With it being a jam, that makes sense, but maybe try and slow down how much you're teaching the player at once and how many people / places they get to know within the first 30 minutes.
The battle HUD is gorgeous and I love the use of color in your skill descriptions. I also liked your mapping!
I will say, I think your title card is INCREDIBLY misleading -- I would've skipped over your game if I were just scrolling bc the font / gem combo makes it look like a mobile gacha game, rather than the really well-developed RPG that it is and I would've been really sad to miss this one!
Are you planning on continuing to develop this? I'd love to keep up with your dev on it, if so! :)
Aw, thank you for trying out the game. I really appreciate it, especially the feedbacks. :)
And I do! But it would be on a different game which will be set like hundred of years after the "Creation". Planning to create a game page of it soon purely for game dev logs as it is still early in development. :D
Creative battle mechanics, smart use of animations to create a visual spectacle. Good mapping. A lot of explanation of characters' backstories that really adds to their motivations.
Heartfelt story that slightly became tarnished by the ending.
Overall, this shows a great deal of potential and it was a fun game!
Thank you so much for this Swan. Especially the criticisms. Really appreciate it. <3
Amazing intro, very intriguing! The art and music are very captivating and works well together. It sets the mood very nicely at the beginning *thumbs up*
WOOOW, nice CUTSCENE! I love the cat on the roof xD
The caring lady wife is gorgeous!
I love that there's a guy who cares for nature!
Awesome battle system!
I like how you animated the enemy as well!
The attack animations and sound effects make the battle feel so alive!
Aw, thanks a lot for trying out the game. I hope you enjoyed :D
I got this one for judging so posting my thoughts here for you, and any suggestions in case you wish to expand this later:
I liked the idea of this, and you had a lot of good design decisions to avoid banging my head at the puzzles too long. I liked how you on the line the crystals up puzzle told me when it was in the right spot so I didn't spend my entire hour doing 6! (6 factorial, or 720) choices because I got the memory of a goldfish.
Battles felt well done. I did feel like a couple members didn't have enough skills to ever use up their 100 energy, but then again I suppose that is not a requirement.
I did hit an odd bug. Apparently you do not regenerate any energy when you start battle, so if you end a battle too fast you can end up with 0 energy for the next battle. May want to make sure you get the 40 energy on turn 1 too to avoid that. The orbs help a little but they are only 20 energy so if I spend 40 energy on everyone's first turn and kill the monsters on turn 1, then get the orb for +20 I'm still -20 from where I started the last battle at due to not getting any energy on turn 1. It's manageable even with this, but something to look at for fixing for a later build.
So you also did psyche me out. I got the prompt you won with x defeats so thought it was done, then I started seeing...a totally different scene in the village? I have to admit I'm not sure what the point was of that last scene in the village, it felt so out of place with the rest of the game.
Overall though I feel it is really well done, with just a couple small things that are worth looking into and fixing for later.
Aw, thank you so much for this honest feedback! I appreciate it. The game is like an intro to my main and actual Lakserf game so I will use these to improve it. I highly appreciate it. :D
Regarding the energy when starting a battle, it was intentional since I wanted to make energy management a part of the game. Your feedback and experience with it will help improve the game a lot.
And finally the last scene. It was intended to be the protagonist's turning point and have the players see what was really going on. :3
Great presentation, and clearly a lot of love has gone into the battle system. I enjoyed getting to know an array of characters inside those first 10-15 minutes, and I liked all the details that brought the game to life - with an effective use of lighting, particles and animations :)
Thank you for the feedback! I appreciate that you emphasized and pointed out the battle system since it's a simplified version of my main game. :D
good game well played
Thank you for trying out the game! Hope you enjoyed. :D
