The custom art in this game is really beautiful and parts of the dialogue were rather witty, but a larger majority felt forced and awkward / like it didn't fully fit with the overall tone and aesthetic of the game. It did make me laugh that the entire story was based around Juno's lack of strawberries -- and riding on a penguin made me laugh!
Overall, I think you have an interesting start to something with this one, but there are parts that could definitely use some more time and polish. I hope you keep working on this one!
Thanks, Erin! I am definitely looking forward to make this a complete, polished game. I suppose what felt awkward to you were the jokes about modern-day stuff? (taxes, for example). If so, I definitely can understand why you would feel it's forced, maybe the type of humour is not everyone's liking (and that's completely fine!). I am happy to have made you laugh with the other silly elements, though.
I appreciate your input dearly :).
That was exactly it -- we're in this fantastical world, which is super well-established, and then BAM, back to the real world. But, like you mentioned, it could just not be for me in that regard. :)
So ended up streaming the game. Your battle system is really quite annoying. Non-standard keys, strange key positioning. Normally you'd do something like X and C or X and Z or Z and C, not D and Q. You'd normally do Q and E or D and A, not Q and D. It gets worse because there really is no feedback of "hey this is what you are supposed to do". "You should dodge!" With what key?!
Bugs in every map. I couldn't even get one minute into the game without a bug. Invisible walls everywhere too, including one that blocks the way you are supposed to go. (Potential hard block depending on how you do the puzzle).
The penguin is badly coded, especially in the grove and when returning home.
The battles really aren't fun. I ended up just cheesing the later fight because it wasn't fun to do normally. First battle I ended up skipping it because it just wasn't even fun.
The dialogues are extremely slow and repetitive, especially at the end. When you do a "return to before" type ending, you need some sort of warning for the player of "that is the end, but you can keep exploring".
It got bad enough that I skipped most of the side dialogue and just rushed the ending about halfway through. The dialogue is really just painfully slow for someone who reads at a decent speed since you can't skip it due to the waits. Like, every single dialogue has a wait it seems.
Lots of questionable word choices (words that don't mean what they are used for, possible typos, etc.
Sure. Thank you for playing.
I got this for judging in round one, here are my thoughts:
Art style of this game is definitely different. Not sure what I think of the MC though. Wasn't expecting a battle system like what you have though. Unfortunately your battle system lacks a tutorial which is sorely needed. I had no idea what key was attack so I had to just select to skip the battle so I could see more of the game.
Then I got to the forest chasing the squirrel and was stuck by some bushes. I was stuck on that for like 10 minutes as I spammed every key on my keyboard until I found the one for attack. You really should be sure the player knows what it is. On my keyboard it ended up being K.
Unfortunately you got a lot of bugs once I get to the smiling kingdom. I was able to walk through some walls to get on the top wall. I was able to get stuck in a wall of a house (I did get back out after a little). But the worst bug was once I was told where to go, I encountered the lady then got kicked back, so I went back and that entire scene relooped. I wasn't able to get past it either, it was an endless loop.
I think overall you have a good start to the game, but the end feels like you started to run out of time. A little more time for bug testing, and a proper battle tutorial would go a long ways for this game. Hopefully you expand on this and add those in once the contest is over.
Hi! Thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure what do you mean by "Not sure what I think of the MC though"? It would be great if you could elaborate further.
As I have addressed before, the battle system and lack of tutorials/telegraphy is definitely a major issue.
I'm unsure how the letter 'K' was assigned to be the attack key on your keyboard. Attack is binded to 'D', while the Moon Dash is binded to 'Q'. Other bindings are RM default.
I, however, NEED to point out that it's not a bug what you mentioned about the lady. That's just the end of the demo. Remember this is just a demo version. It was done that way so the player, in case they missed conversations with the NPCs, could go back and interact with them.
You are right, however, saying that things started to get rushed by the end of the game. The worst bugs of the game are present once you get to the Happiest Kingdom. Quite unfortunate, to say the least. I didn't have much time to playtest and get rid of bugs.
Again, thank you for playing and commenting on my page.
I think that's more I was still figuring her out when the game ended more than anything. Probably with more to it I'd have more an opinion.
Great art! A penguin is definitely the superior mode of fast travel. I think you've already addressed the main points below in terms of combat / tutorial / telegraphing attacks etc.
Otherwise, good job!
cute, fun and very challenging! I liked this so far, the characters are hilarious and the story is fun!
Hey man, thank you so much for playing! I'm super happy you liked it.
It was cute, although I didn't know it would turn in a game of reflexes and being expected to know what a Moon Dash is without being told. The combat part wasn't my forte and I did get rather frustrated with the trees, however, the rest of t he game from what I played was rather charming and I loved the use of custom graphics. Sometimes, my attention waned when the dialogue boxes were too slow going to the second line or next set of messages, but that could be a me thing.
Definitely looks promising, though! Good job!
Thank you for the great feedback. It's completely true the battle system ended up being the weakness of the whole game. Sadly, the battle system to be used originally was an ATB, which had to be discarded (couldn't make all the graphics in time). The battle with the tree is definitely what makes people get frustrated the most. This has been a major mistake on my end, and the zero amount of tutorials / guidance / telegraphy as well. This is definitely something I'll get changed for the complete version of the game. Thanks for taking your time to play the game.
P.S: I downloaded yours and as soon as I get some spare time I'll jump on it.
I'll definitely keep an eye out for the complete version of the game! It is super charming and you did such a good job on that front.
i Love the artwork!
Thank you a lot! Hope you can give it a try
Hey bro good demo. Fun characters, good setting and pace. It has so much potential!
The art is really amazing! Loved the deeper dialogues with some of the characters (The highlight for me being the old man)
Also the final scene gave me chills.
Keep at it man, with some elbow grease this could be a great game
For the short length of the game, I found a pretty good story. I would like to see more from this. I really recommend to try this game. Diamond.
Amazing demo with a storyline that makes you desire for the complete game to be released soon.
Controls are smooth, the art is also amazing, and despite the music not being authentic/made by the creator, it adds a lot of sense to each scene, event and scenario.
Can't wait to see and play what's in store!
