Enjoyment 4/5: Thoroughly enjoyed my time with this. Only a small amount of exceptions, some of which is because I happened to miss a key exit that I never found again.
Execution 4/5: Almost perfect in many ways. Very few flaws. The map in particular should be reworked to give a lot more information about room shape, even generally. (In turn, this might have also helped enjoyment, a generally comorbid category.)
Sensory 5/5: Everything fits and nothing really fails to fit. Remarkably good use of small screen.
Metroidvania 5/5: Many mechanics, creative use of small changes.
Relevance to Theme: 2/5: I did not notice the stated thing happening. I would not have known the theme without being told.
This is one of my favorites to win so far, and both of those favorites to win are games that I would buy a polished take on if they showed up on Steam. Good on the dev.
Thanks! Regarding the key, Ive indicated in some posts that you just need to get hurt in the crawlspace on the way out, that way youre able to break the blocks. That will be fixed in a QOL patch I will put up after the jam, sorry for the inconvienience!
OH! And I think you had also already told me on Discord what I missed as well, thanks for that. Honestly the game was quality enough that that one bit couldn't do much to bring it down.
Wow, what a cool game! Especially for being made in 12 days, this is really ambitious! There's a lot of good things to say, so I'll start there. The visual style is obviously a stand-out, it really captures the grossness of 90s cartoons. Seeing Meatball move remained delightful throughout the entire game, his funny crawls, the bounciness when he crouches, and some of the unique animations like blushing after getting a kiss, just overall fantastic. The soundtrack is solid too, and I found the core character movement to be pretty satisfying. Combat was simple, but serviceable enough, I especially enjoyed bouncing on enemies with the downward attack. I quite enjoyed the boxing gloves boss, that one was fun.
There's two main points of criticism I have. One is rather minor: the camera was sometimes uncooperative. Sometimes I couldn't see very far ahead of myself, so I ended up running into a wall, or worse, an enemy.
The other is a bit more substantial, which is that I think the world is too big for the amount of content you have. There's not a lot of variety in enemies, hazards, tiles, etc. which is super understandable for a jam, but the world you created is huge! I spent quite a lot of time just wandering around, looking for progress, and this really took the wind out of my sails. The fact that the map isn't connected, but made up of disconnected chunks connected by bubbles (love that his name is Kino btw) makes it hard to get your bearings. The worst of it was after I got the bomb powerup, when I ended up spending nearly an hour backtracking through the entire world looking for a place to bomb to progress. I found a lot of powerups, but no progress. As you know, I ended up having to ask on Discord, and it turns out a wall had disappeared by itself at the starting area. I'd even gone back to the starting area, but I hadn't noticed that a block behind the save point had gone missing. This felt rather frustrating, I'm not sure how I was supposed to figure it out myself. If I hadn't gotten to ask a dev, I probably would've dropped the game there, which would've been a shame, because I really enjoyed it overall!
Oh, yeah, one little hangup, during the ending sequence, I ended up going back the way I came from and ended up wasting 3 minutes before realizing that I couldn't exit the zone that way. Probably should lock the right exit from the boss room.
I ended up writing a lot of criticism, but that's only because I really enjoyed this game, I promise! All the core systems, mechanics, presentation are incredibly solid, but the lack of guidance combined with the huge size of the map sadly soured it a bit for me. Still, incredible job!
(I got 90% item completion but sadly did not rescue my wife ;_;7 rest in peace)
I can only move...is there something I am missing?
Go back one room and look around, the falling teeth might help you..
lol wow I can't believe I missed that!
WOW okay so this was really great in terms of animations and play feel..... the door triggers had some issues of flashing between scenes.... and this is a lot of confusion of what everything is.... I feel like I am in a "Ren & Stimpy" Cartoon .....so points on the art/animations/sfx forsure! Its pretty fun and enjoyable also...just needs more polish probably!
Thanks! In foresight I probably should have put area names and stuff but the orange guy with the bubble functions as an area elevator, and the egg room saves your game!
Super great intro animation. Are we in someone's mouth? I thought this was gonna be more funny and interesting from the pictures? Didn't get very far...ran into some "brain looking purple thing" I couldn't get by
How do I get to the game? I don't see a download button on the page.
Trying to fix some major issue right now, will go up in a few!
Recent patches have fixed major issues, should be more stable now
Came back and tried again. definitely took me a bit to figure out how to activate the full screen, but I love the interaction with the shop keep. great work!
Edit:
Was too tired last night to put my thoughts together in a Cohesive way, but I really enjoyed the games art style noises and progression. the pop ups with the power explanations was quite good! I didn't understand the one with like poison gas and glasses? not sure what that one did exactly, but had a ton of fun exploring and finding secret bread. spent way too much time in the shops cause that shop keep has so much personality.
got soft locked early on then somehow start flying thru walls. after resetting the game didn't progress form the start scene. the game was very small on my screen and no way to make it larger that i could figure out.
You were playing a broken version, please play the newer ones posted! I accidently uploaded a debug build, its been a disasterous start. The rest of the game is much more functional I promise-- and ass for screen size, theres a square on the left in the title screen that changes your screen. Many apologies!
A patch fixing missing music and the debug issue is out. Apologies for the wait, saves should transfer fine
Please note that the build posted initially is broken, I am fixing it now
