Great work! Good story and setup for a level-based engine game, and here are some of my favorite mechanical things about this game:
- Centipedes have a bunch of interesting behaviors / logic that triggers when they become heads, that's awesome! Using built-in behavior as a trigger for gameplay was pretty effective.
- The different levels were varied, I had to make different decisions for each level. The different snakes actually guided my decision making.
- Its brevity actually helped it -- each level had different notes to it making it feel more replayable. Picking which character and min-maxing their behaviors feels like an actual thing one might go do.
I felt like my score could have been MUCH higher by incrementally killing the centipede parts to get more head-related points.
I haven't spent a lot of time with shooty ZZT games, though I can certainly appreciate arcade vibes! I think I really struggle to remember to treat different colored things different ways so that is trolly! Like playing games like Ikaruga really breaks my brain. I can't really hold that kind of thing in my brain while trying to also dodge bullets and such so this was really hard for me! Good troll there and maybe the only one of this year's crop of Oktrollberfest games that really works on that mechanical level.
I also really like the multiple characters and the way they sort of have different stats and endings as a result! I know you were struggling making this but it feels like you made a lot of interesting and cool TECH and then felt rushed to make levels to use that tech, which is a classic move I pull all the time! Including my game for this year!
This was a fun arcade romp that I felt well-prepared for after grinding away in Freelance Dungeons for countless hours in 2023. But I underestimated how nasty centi-play can get when accuracy, ammo, and a lack of a fullscreen option come into play. I squinted my way to mediocre victory. (I ran out of ammo ONCE and cheated (Level 7)).
It was easy to pick up, play, and I think it got easier as the levels went on. I didn't feel trolled but I was impressed by levels which appear newbie-style but elevated inside of a slick arcade engine. STEELJAW FOR PRESIDENT!
